Hi,
Does Yasu/TTDS care if I upload a custom version of YSMenu/TTMenu? I know that they are gone from the DS scene but I don't wanna be sued.
Actually YSmenu is still developed, if you have have the source for it then you should be allowed to. For whatever stupid reason you just can’t link YSmenu to anyone else unless it’s the GBAtemp link. I find it dumb to do something like that for software anyone should be allowed to improve or maybe revamp into something better.

Does anyone have the source?
Doubt it, your chances of finding any flashcart kernel source is near slim these days, you have companies who work close sourced and homebrew developers who don't source their kernel work either. It's unfortunate, what makes it dumber is the fact people in the past have complained about missing features and what not, this could easily be solved with open source kernels/SDK's, problem is most if not all of them these days are closed for no reason. The ones that are open source or have an SDK in general are for things like the DSTWO. Then again even if we had the open sources nobody would do anything with it, they would probably wave their CFW flags at everyone. I know that sounds rude and all but it's pretty predictable these days and it's rather annoying lol. A lot of developers in the past complained about people "stealing" their work, well the thing is it wouldn't be stealing if you stuck a license on it from GitHub or something, it's easily possible. Why people don't think about things like this is beyond me. I am not trying to bash people or anything, just rather the wonky decision for flashcarts and things related to them. I bet you if we had open sourced kernels then we would have some really kickass stuff going for flashcarts, better cheat code handling, better customization, etc. The question of "which one has better compatibility" would be tossed out the window instantly. If you really wanted to mess with a flashcart then all I can tell you is the DSTWO since the SDK for that is publicly available. There is an old relic version of the Acekard RPG kernel as well, maybe you can tinker around with that if you find it.

It's actually this limitation that seriously upsets me more than most people know. Right now I have RGF's YSmenu 7.06 right at the tip of my fingers and I've had it since August. It's been fully tested and all issues like Pokemon Black and White not working, have been fixed and fully tested. Due to this limitation, I am simply sitting on these files waiting for RGF to maybe one day log back on and release this update, even though I confirmed months ago that it's working. I personally want to share this update because it's not fair to be limited like this due to arbitrary reasons. I know if I do share it, even if it's for the greater good, I will be hated because "YOU DISRESPECTED RGF'S WISHES!!" and of course people will over react, even though I am doing something that should have been done months ago. This may all be based on the notion of respecting the people behind the project, but it also allows issues like this to exist if the dev decides to vanish.

Well we still have options, we still have access to ancient versions of the Acekard RPG sources, we do have Wood R4 sources if we dig hard enough. We still have the power to make something with it, rebuild it with the vastly improved knowledge we have today versus back in the day, the problem is most peoples wave their CFW flags in peoples faces. I know what CFW is, but that isn't what I sat here and requested to have lol. I know it's there, but that isn't my question, my question is who will make the next best kernel that could be universal to almost every flashcart we have today? I actually tried getting into it myself personally, I don't have a lot of coding knowledge though, I barely started learning DS ASM as it is.

I would love for someone to actually pick those old source codes and make something out of them. That's literally how Wood R4 was born, YWG picked up the AK source and created Wood R4 for the old R4, something not in the Ak line.
But honestly, I've hated how the old NDS scene used to create these annoying rules and close everything off. I know someone people are like, "But they just end up stealing code and that makes it harder for these carts to sell!" which is honestly a garbage argument because even though they all stole code from each other, carts still sold regardless.

I know the feeling of being upset about stuff like this....Seriously I have been trying to figure out ways to workaround issues like this not just for myself but for others as well. I am tired of the stupid CFW flags, I am tired of the lack of interest in these devices, I am tired of the fact that NOTHING was ever pushed to it's potential over the years, I am tired of the unfinished projects. There is SO much that can still be done with these flashcarts it isn't even funny. We could develop save editors or save dumpers/injectors, we could have a cheat code editor for crying out loud (seriously we should have at least had this ages ago), emulation would be better now since we have the power to basically stick whatever code we want in them now, literally we have the ultimate power to do so, and here we are sitting on a whole lot of nothing (or crap, whichever you prefer), playing with our thumbs as the days, months, and years go by. Before anyone starts saying "why not you look into it", I have already, unfortunately I don't have the coding knowledge for that line of work just yet, I will tell you this, if I had the knowledge I definitely wouldn't be letting you guys sit on broken glass for so many years. You guys would have had tons more fun with these devices than we do now.

This is literally how I feel and I couldn't have said it better myself.

This is partly why I maintain cheat codes for the DS flashcarts now, the project was dropped back in 2012, for a moment there was something in 2014, but that dropped instantly. There is so much that can be done with those alone. I took the reigns and called it my own, I WILL keep giving it a purpose no matter how small it is, it helps people, it makes people happy, it's a part of history we can't just drop because of new fancy technology. Things like flashcarts, cheating devices, etc is what gave definition to all of the things we have today anyways. These things may be old, but they will never be obsolete, regardless of the limitations the consoles or the devices have in general. I KNOW they can do more, I can feel it that's how much I know it, in my gut and all. You either go big or go home, I say we go BIG.

WOW you Just wrote so much. Maybe we could ask if YWG would give us the source if we promise him that we would rename the kernel to something else. He closed the source because he had soooo many people ask him why something is not working because other people made wood r4 for clones.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I've made my very own kernel for the R4iSDHC family. I called it Lightning DS. I made it with the base of other kernels (R4 King+YSMenu+MoonShell2). The problem was I had no source code of these kernels, so I started HEX editing these kernels. In the end it looked really nice. You could change themes and more. The problem was that it was really slow. This was because I used YSMenu AutoBoot to load up the R4 King FW (because it won't load up primary).

Maybe if we have the source of the newest Wood R4 kernel, we could make it so that it works on near all flashcards. I couldn't get Wood R4 on on my R4iSDHC to work.
Well you can use the old Acekard RPG source, Wood R4 was developed with that source and has since been updated to what we have today.
