Hi guys.

I currently have an opportunity to buy a used PSP at a criminally low price, the only problem is that the UMD drive in the PSP is broken. Now my question is, should I buy it?

The PSP has a 5.50 Gen-D3 firmware on it, and I only want to play the new Metal Gear game and Birth By Sleep, along with some older titles and emulators, but those two games interest me in particlar. Is that PSP with a 2GB memory stick all I need to do this? Is it true that UMD drives are practically useless when you play your games from the Memory Card? Will I need the UMD drive for anything in the future?

Thanks in advance for the help.

UMD drive is useless, there's nothing where you need it as PSPs can play everything from the memory stick (on custom firmware) with no problem.

Follow the softmod stick's "update to the latest custom firmware" section and you'll be good to go for those games.

Thanks for the answer. I've already ordered the PSP

Some games are quite large and you'll only be able to hold 1 game.

MGS PW is like 1.53gb and thats not including adding 300mb for the 'optional' data install so the game has voice instead of just text, or 800mb for faster loading times.

But yea I've never used my umd drive once.

the only thing you would need the drive for is playing UMD-PG stuff.
so unless your into hardcore japanese hentai-games you dont need it.
