Gaming PSP Water Damage

Ok, basically I dropped some water on my PSP a month ago (Wasn't TOO much and it was just the front) that was from an air cleaner so the water is pretty dirty. I dried it and put it on on charge a few hours later, then a short while after I turned it on and it worked. So I turned it off and left it in my cupboard and haven't played it since. But now it doesn't work, it charges fine but the system won't actually turn on. When I open the UMD drive I can smell the smell of the dirty water. I know the best way to fix it is to open it up and try to clean it. But when I open it up what should I use to clean it? I've read some people that have said to put the PSP in a bowl of rice and others that have said to use pure alcohol. So what should I really use?

i'd say use alcohol and try using the microfiber cloth that the psp comes with,also avoid touching the lens, or if your psp is under warranty try returning it.

anyway....for future reference....if you every get water on your electronics...don't turn it on! should let it dry for a few days at least, week or 2 may be best....

Yeah, remove the battery and let it dry out on its own for at least 48-72 hours. I can't believe people that tell me they dropped their cellphone in the toilet/bathtub, and then are surprised that THEY fried it by trying to turn it on after the liquid damage shorted the device. I've heard about the rice thing before, I try not to mix food and electronics if I can help it.

yes, putting item with electronics in them in a bowl (or bag) of uncooked rice can help speed up the drying process. the rice works like a de-humidifier and wicks any moisture away from what's around it.

of course, then his psp will smell like dirty water and rice!

Cooked rice - Steam seeps into the electronic's circuits, cleansing the interior of unwanted dust particles and the like.

Cooked rice could add extra condensation inside the unit though, so you may want to avoid that.

Along with not turning it on after it's gotten wet and letting it dry for several days, IF the battery also got wet, best bet is to just replace the battery. Lithium Ion batteries are fairly nasty, and not nearly as stable as other rechargeable battery types, as they tend to go into thermal runaway at a drop of the hat.

Also get the battery out of any device thats been in water ASAP as most circuits are ON to a certain degree even if the device is off.
