(quick thanks to @linuxares for the screenshot that I am going to use).

/hbg/ are now asking for people's certs.

Now, you should NEVER SHARE YOUR CERT. There is a very high risk that your console will get banned because of it. Because, what most likely will happen is /hbg/ will abuse the certificate and Nintendo will ban it.

Avoid programs that dump your cert/prodinfo.bin (Incognito for example). To stay safe. Remember, they can do what they want with the cert you gave them. I'm not saying that their intentions are malicious. But just do this at your own risk!

I got caught out very early on in scene developments, not by this but by someone who offered an automated way of extracting your console's cert from your prodinfo.bin via a bot on his Discord server. Within a short period my console was banned.

I mentioned it on here but the general consensus was it's your own fault and you knew the risks :rofl2: I can laugh about it now because at least I no longer have to worry about being banned.

I'm assuming they will use them for grabbing game updates for games they didn't originally dump/purchase.
^^^

They'll probably use it until it's burnt and move on to another one. Then repeat until nobody gives them anymore certs or their server dies.

guess they use it for CDN and i guess they are your banned Console can still download from CDN as long as you have a CDN UNBANNED cert and i guess they want exactly this unbanned one

/hbg/ (either being malicious or complete morons) are now asking for people's certs.

People on these channels know that their certs are going to be nuked. It's literally a piracy Discord and it's stated pretty clear these certs are being used to scrape updates/dlc. You get a certain status in return which I guess gives access to unlimited downloads/bandwidth or something. Seems like a reasonable deal if you don't care about your switch being banned.
Did you even read the terms on the Discord or is this just another fear mongering thread?

Edit: Also, before raging in with pitchforks I am not affiliated with /hbg/ or anything.

Yep, Guess they really don't know how to do it safely... wonder how long it will be till nintendo gets to them

There is no safe way to get new updates without certs. Everyone can grab downloads from a gdrive or torrent. But where do you think the content comes from?

Yeah, no. Some people don't know the consequences of giving a cert to someone else. They'll do it and think nothing of it. Then a week later wonder why their console is banned.

I think this is being misinterpreted. They are talking about a donation, not about sharing. If this was considered a safe, harmless procedure everyone would "donate" and get the perks. This is for those who know what they are doing and willing to donate (think CD) - not share (think MP3) their cert.

I mean fair enough. But not everyone will know what they're doing and donate anyway. This is a warning for those people. Also, I've never seen a piracy server asking for people's certs. So this seems a bit malicious.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
