Hi all,

I'm having major trouble updating my brother in law's PS5 and I suspect there might be a hardware issue, but I’m not sure.

When trying to update from within the PS5 OS, it fails and shows error SU-101312-8.

In Safe Mode, choosing “Update System Software” via internet or USB gets to 1 second left, then hangs briefly and throws the same error: “Something went wrong.”

Options like Rebuild Database or Clear Cache sometimes

Clear System Software Cache option will reboot PS5 back to safe mode and then Repair Console Storage will get it back to main menu however and it then says "Rebuilding database...". I can get back logged in and thru all the settings etc. But trying another update will give the same error and then kick me to the safe mode menu that only has 2 options (update and restore firmware).

Trying “Reinstall System Software via USB” also fails with the same error — I've tested different USB drives and even re-downloaded the official PS5 reinstall .PUP file from Sony’s site. Made sure to use correct file structure including capitals etc and formatted drive. It finds the file and will start the restore but gives a "Something went wrong".

I am wondering if the storage IC needs replaced?? Or another part? I took it apart and verified the Blu-ray drive is connected and blew out quite a lot of dust.

Thanks all.

The error SU-101312-8 is indicating that the disc drive is not responding to the southbridge.
In most cases one of the fuses at the disc drive power connector is blown. I would check if 5V and 12V are reaching the disc drive pcb.
On the disc drive board are also fuses to check.

Thanks, is there any particular post or guide to reference for which pins to check for these voltages etc.?

Appreciate your knowledge.

The four pin connector on the mainboard has fuses F5401 and F5402. Depending on the board version the fuses are on the other side of the board (edm-010/020) or on the same side (edm-03x).

At all versions the 5V (pwr_on) and 12V (stdby) should reach the disc drive board. Additonal fuses on the drive board are direct at the four pin connector and at least one @ F501.

Amazing! I stuck a voltmeter on either side of the bottom fuse, I believe it's the 5v one, and it was def blown. My 72 y/o grandma-in-law who I was visiting happens to do circuit board work for a living and whipped out a microscope, pulled the appropriate fuse out of a drawer and slapped it in there in under 2 minutes. PS5 immediately took an update and is working as expected. Thanks so much!

Would you happen to know what the values for those fuses are? I'm particularly having trouble finding the value for F501, but the more the better - never know which might fail next.

look up the LittleFuse marking or Panasonic fuse marking datasheet and you should find out what amp F501 is

Forgot to reply; thanks, and yes, I actually realized when I was looking at the fuse that the marking was actually very weird -- which told me it was a LittelFuse symbol, they're the only weird ones as far as I know :) it's nice because they're not ambiguous like other letter-based markings. In case anyone ends up needing it, F501 is 0.75A.

I’m having the same issue, from the replies, do I have to open up my ps5 in order to fix this?

Hello there, I have the same problem; have same error message and already tried all the same update methods; USB/flash drive and update/download via Internet but nothing works.

What strikes me very odd is that I have this error and my console doesn´t even have a blu ray!
It´s a digital version with no internal nor has an external blu ray drive ever been connected to the console.

I am based in Iceland have asked allot of experts but nobody can help.

Can anyone here help, please? Thanks guys
