Hey guys, I have a quick question, but let me explain the background first.
I bought a brand new PS5 slim on ebay yesterday. The stickers on the lid of the box were untouched. I opened it, did the whole initialization thing, set up an internet connection, but did not update my firmware.
I heard that the disc drive must be authenticated before you can use it, and to do this you have to be on the latest firmware. I'm still on firmware version 8.0, but I managed to install and play 2 disc-based games.

Now the question is: Did something unusual happen, or is it just not true that you have to be on the latest firmware to authenticate the disc drive?

i mean, they likely allow it to work out the box because you may not have intenernet and just want to play some games, or simply test it before gifting, so out the box it works, but if you marry a new drive that isnt preconfigured out the factory then it would ask to activate, or swapping the drive out

I know it needs to be activated to get bluray (the license) else not really sure.

I think it only needs activating if you bought a slim and then added a drive on separately.

As you say they should come pre-paired as a “disc edition console”.

I bought a disc edition slim a little over a month back, and the drive is completely shut off.

Can I enable it without updating?

Edit: current firmware is 7.61

Afaik: no you have to pair the drive online to be able to use it if it isn’t working..

Strange it wasn’t pre-paired, but maybe Sony is now silently testing the water for the online requirement.

Sneaky sneaky.

People have to start complaining since there are still many places in the world that have metered connections.

So my current best bet is to wait for a 7.61 exploit and hope that someone figures out the pairing process at some point?

I can still dump my ps4 games through my ps4 and install them on my ps5 in that scenario... Still kinda sucks that they're doing this

Edit: Would've been nice if sony offered files to pair the disc drive offline.

If PS5 Pro has that requirement I'll just avoid buying one, then. :( I hate online activations for consoles, it should always be up to the customer if he/she wants to use it online or offline.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're just being lazy/cheap and couldn't be bothered pairing it at the factory.

Everything else like AP, forced updates, etc. being more of a side effect.

At the rate things are going, I question whether the PS6 will even have a disc drive.

This console generation is just slacking so I don't see the point of a PS6 / Xbox Series "Z" (lol). Even they couldn't hype their audience to go out and buy a new console when the current ones are so stale.
