PS3 Games of the Month: October 2010

We have a MAJOR explosion of great games this month. October is a great month to own a PS3. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

- No flaming. If I list a game you don't like, too bad. If I don't, too bad.
- This is mainly North American releases, sorry. I'll, on occasion, do a European or Japanese release if it's big enough and not already out in America.
- If a game is already released in English and is being released again for another region, I won't bother adding it. Like say if Duke Nukem Forever was out in America in April (it won't) and it came out in May in Europe, I won't list it for May. I'll also do the same if a game was released in English (aka Europe or America) and is being released in Japan.
- I get my dates from GameFaqs, Wikipedia, and IGN, so if a date is wrong don't blame me. You can, of course, point it out and ask me to fix it if you have the right date.
- Yes, I will be listing non-exclusives. Get over it.
- Layout and idea is by Guild McCommunist (but tweaked just a bit), and used with his permission.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Developed by: Mercurysteam and Kojima Productions
Published by: Konami
Release date: October 5th (America), October 7th (Europe)
Genre: Action Adventure
My Hype Level: I'm not too much into Castlevania games, but I might take a look at it.
Internet Hype Level: I may have never played a Castlevania game, but since Hideo Kojima had his hand in this, IT MUST BE GOOD!

It looks pretty good. I'm not going to drool over it just because Kojima is spearheading it, but that's okay too. It seems pretty God-of-War-Like and you get experience through every kill so i'm guessing there is some sort of level up system. All in all, it's not your typical metroidvania game. I may rent this, but then again there are more pressing games on my list.

NBA Jam

Developed by: EA Canada
Published by: EA Sports
Release date: October 5th (NA)
Genre: Sports
My Hype Level: I laid waste to many-a-quarter with this game in my childhood, and I will definately be grabbing the new and improved version!
Internet Hype Level: The younger gamers may get this out of pure awesomeness, but the older gamers will get this out of pure nostalgia.

Of coarse, as you all may know, NBA Jam was a very successful arcade game, before being ported to the SNES. Many older gamers have fond memories of this game, even if they loathe sports games. There will be a cut-down version available for free with the purchase of NBA Elite 11 for the PS3 and 360. The PS3 version, along with the 360 version will feature online play (sorry Wii owners)

Enslaved: Oddyssey to the West

Developed by: Ninja Theory
Published by: Namco Bandai Games
Release date: October 5th (NA), October 8th (UK)
Genre: Tactical Action Adventure
My Hype Level: Eh....not really my bag.
Internet Hype Level: Heavenly Sword was awesome and underrated! Go Ninja Theory!

With a stave that shoots projectiles, a magical headband, killer robots, and a protagonist named Monkey, you may not recognize the underlying folklore. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is a Tactical Action Adventure game that is based VERY loosely off of the Chinese folktale, Journey To The West.

Rock of the Dead

Developed by: Epicenter Studios
Published by: Conspiracy Entertainment and UFO Interactive
Release date: October 5th (NA)
Genre: Music
My Hype Level: Thanks, but no thanks.
Internet Hype Level: 50/50 at this point. Either you love it or you hate it.

Pretty much Typing of the dead with your existing guitar peripheral, and classical music played by the likes of Rob Zombie. No licensed music in this one, folks. But, the upside is that support for Drum peripherals are confirmed.

DJ Hero 2

Developed by: FreeStyleStudios
Published by: Activision
Release date: October 19th (NA, AUS), October 22 (EU)
Genre: Rythm/Music
My Hype Level: Wahey! The best music I will never listen to!
Internet Hype Level: Those that loved the first will love this, and those who never bought it won't buy this one either.

You'll be dissapointed to know that there are no mashups in this version. Though, there is a pretty decent tracklist if you look past Soulja Boi, Chamillionaire, and Lady Gaga. DJ Hero 2 will add a more detailed single player career mode, called "Empire", that provides more structure than the previous game. The game will also allow a 3rd person to jump in and play Vocals using a microphone.

Fallout: New Vegas

Developed by: Obsidian Entertainment
Published by: Bethesda Softworks and Namco Bandai Games
Release date: October 19th (NA, AUS), October 22 (EU)
Genre: Action Role-Playing
My Hype Level: *SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!*
Internet Hype Level: It's Over 9000!!!!!

War. War Never Changes. You will once again hear these somber words flowing through your speakers. The setting takes place in New Vegas where the nukes never really hit. There will be gambling, C4, robot sex, and did I mention gambling? Obsidian Entertainment has spearheaded this project. For those who don't know....*moves away from the mic to breathe in* Black Isle Studios, who was a division of Interplay developed Fallout 1 and 2. In 2003, Interplay was liquidated, and most employees found jobs elsewhere in the industry, but a handfull of those from Black Isle decided to stick together and formed Obsidian. So, to make a long story short, Obsidian, people who had their hand in Fallout 1 and 2, are now in charge of Fallout: New Vegas.

Vanquish

Developed by: Platinum Games
Published by: Sega
Release date: October 19th (NA, AUS), October 22 (EU)
Genre: Third Person Shooter
My Hype Level: It's....it's so beautiful!
Internet Hype Level: Whut's a Vanquish?

So, you may be asking yourself...what the hell is this? I'll admit...this flew under the radar from even me. I just barely played the demo tonight and I have to say it is one of the finest third person shooters I have ever seen. The game is about...you know what, I'll let Wikipedia explain this one...

Russia and the United States are vying for ownership of the world’s fast-depleting energy resources and the US has constructed a space station in order to harness energy from the sun. Russian forces capture this space station and divert its harvested solar energy into a blast wave that destroys San Francisco, aiming to force the US into a total and unconditional surrender. In response, the US tasks its armed forces with recapturing the space station before the Russians can annihilate their next target – New York. The player will take control of Sam (voiced by Gideon Emery in the English version), a government agent kitted out with a futuristic battlesuit.

Okay, so in this suit you can jump around and slide on the ground with rocket boosters, and all kinds of crazy shit. This game is very fast paced, and is similar to Gears of War in many ways, and IMO does it all better, but you'll have to make that decision on your own.

Rock Band 3

Developed by: Harmonix
Published by: MTV Games
Release date: October 26th (NA, AUS), October 29th (EU)
Genre: Rythm/Music
My Hype Level: I won't pick it up, but the tracklist looks amazing.
Internet Hype Level: *head asplode*

Rock Band 3 makes a few signifigant changes to the formula this time around, with the inclusion of a keyboard, and Pro Mode. Rock Band's new official guitar now features strings. Yes, that's right. strings. So, now you really can say "Yeah, I am so badass at guitar!" For Pro guitar and bass, a special controller will be required that has the ability to track fingering on specific frets either as fret buttons or strings, and will present this for on-screen feedback to the player. The tracklist will feature one less song packed in at 83.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

Developed by: LucasArts
Published by: LucasArts
Release date: October 26th (NA, AUS), October 29th (EU)
Genre: Action
My Hype Level: This is a definate buy for me. I enjoyed the first immensely.
Internet Hype Level: Youre telling me I get to use dual light sabers, Jedi mind control, AND I can crush an AT-ST and use it as a goddamn electrified cannonball? I'M IN!

Well, the Apprentice makes his return, and with a whole bag of new tricks! In this game you have new powers such as Jedi Mind control, and you can also grab two or more objects at a time with Force Grab. There will also be various puzzle elements, and you'll even get to pilot a Tie fighter. I think I just had a nerdgasm.

Feel free to discuss any game on the list here, and even those that are not! Also feel free to post any screens of games you are interested in.

Looking forward to Castlevania and Vanquish. Fallout: New Vegas not so much. It's being made by Obsidian. They haven't had a great track record with developing games in my opinion.
