Sony has decided to update the firmwares of two of its aging consoles, the PlayStation 3 and the PS Vita. With version 4.89 for the PS3 and version 3.74 for the PS Vita, certain changes have been effected to the account management settings. For instance, log-in password recovery now requires a third-party device as does the creation of a new account for these devices, which cannot be done natively on these systems as of this update.

That is an interesting aspect that has been brought up before.

I wonder how long Sony will keep updating the PS3 even though there are no new games for it (old consoles get indie games all the time these days, but PS3? doesn't seem likely).

I'd buy the "update coz bluray" reasoning if it wasn't for the fact that I have a standalone Sony Bluray player, a model released a few years into the PS3's life, and that hasn't received a firmware update of any description for years now. Still plays current release blurays fine.

I hope this doesn't effect the PS Vita Web browser, nor the earning of Trophies on the system. How long would it most likely take for CFW on the PS3 to be updated to 4.89? Damn you Sony! I'm kind of surprised that there isn't as much overt backlash towards this from Playstation fans as there was towards the attempt to close the PSP, PS Vita and PS3 PSN stores, something which ended up leading them to listen 2/3rds of the way and retract.

evilnat created a cfw for 4.89, so it's out there. tons of potentially new features with 4.89.2, but it could take a while to do all of the suggestions from people. I was going to wait for that, but it could be weeks.
