Is there any safe way of modding a ps2 without actually opening it up or soldering anything? I would be grateful if anyone could help. thx

if the original model then the cogswap method or hd loader
you just have to remove the cd tray cover on the ps2 drive

Which requires opening the PS2 up.

Well, it's more like unscrewing the backplate - no harder than changing batteries in kids toys. I did the soft mod for my PS2 (original version) - pretty easy. The hardest thing is finding all the things you need: official network adapter, action replay with the USB flash drive. The other parts are easy to obtain: PS1 disk, ATA drive. Having my games on a hard drive is awesome though. Just google up "ps2 softmod" and you're good to go. If you can find an Action Replay I'd imagine that the memor32 would work too.

no you dont

one some ps2's (the older ones) you just needed to take off a screw from under the tray when the tray was ejected
the new big ps2's you can just pull it off (like I did)

I did not have to open it at all

that is correct.
you need to update the firmware via usb. then plug in and Bam

Not sure I read that correctly...buy one of these memory cards, plug it into the PS2, and your PS2 can play back-ups? If so, will it work on the later model PS2s (American slim version)?

Thanks
