Hi!

There's a lot of musicians out there. Most of them actually have to tune their instrument. This can be quite tricky, so a lot of them gets a tuner. Tuners are basically passive (gives the correct tone to tune by) or active (listens to what you play and tell you if you're high or low). Have a look at these links to see what I'm getting at.

http://all-guitar-chords.com/tuner.php

http://www.thomann.de/gb/korg_ot120.htm

http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_gt1_tonangeber.htm

Something that's often built into the more expensive tuners is a metronome, but there are specialized metronomes around as well.

http://www.thomann.de/gb/korg_ma30_lcdmetronom.htm

Now, a metronome is basically a thing that goes "click" at a user-set intervall, check this out:

http://www.metronomeonline.com/

So, this is something I want done for the NDS, and something I believe there's a need for.

The metronome part is trivial, the passive tuner part should be simple and the active tuner part should be doable. (The active tuner part is pretty much the same piece of code that's at the heart of Singstar, so if you want to do DSingstar, this is a good place to start)

Oh, questions:

A) Is there already something like this out there in the community?
B) I got zero programming skills, but a kinda/sorta basic, very basic design document typed out. Is anyone interested?
C) is this even the right place to go posting stuff like this? Is there some other forum that would be better suited?

That is a fantastic idea for a homebrew, but alas, it wouldn't work. The DS mic is FAR too low of a quality to do any good as a tuner. Now, maybe with an external mic hooked up, it *could* work, but that gets a bit too deep into the roots of the DS setup than i'm familiar with.

As well, are there any homebrew programs that use the mic yet? I'm sure its been accessed, but i just don't remember seeing anything that has mic support.

You can buy external mics as there is a mic slot on the ds next to the earphone slot

An active tuner would be too difficult for 32KHz, there is an application which gives the sounds for the guitar EADGBe, so you just tune by ear. I find that a lot easier, plus it's a lot better in practice, will definitely help for beginners in the future

Ok, a couple of issues here.

That it has been done... I looked at dcemu, and all I found was this thread

http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/archive/i...hp/t-32890.html

In brief, the thread says that "oh yeah, it would be cool, but I'm way too lazy to learn how to program the mike".

That the built in mike is too awful, well, that should be easily fixed with an external mike, they are really not that expensive. And I guess that since we're not really looking at quality recordings here, the internal mike should (or at least could) be ok for at least quiet surroundings. Only one way to find out.

Then there's the comment from anandjones about 32 kilohertz, care to elaborate on that? I don't understand what you mean. (I'm not a programmer, mind you, just a guy with a vision)

Tuning a guitar by ear is of course intuitive and easy once you get the hang of it, but say you want to tune it differently? And that is only for a guitar, there are a lot of different instruments out there. Tuning six strings by ear is ok, tuning a piano by ear is a tiring, exhausting job for a professional. With a program like this:

http://piano-tuner.sourceforge.net/

It's doable by an amateur in an afternoon. (I have tried)

I envision this program to be "pluginable" for many different instruments, but the guitar is common and many musicians have a DS to pass the time before the gig starts.

I found a guitar tuner for ds that tunes bass, guitars etc. they also can tune it in d drop d.....everything! and it also includes pitch pipe. the tuner is pretty awsome as it tunes my electro acoustic in just slightly under a plugged in tuner but not so bad that you can tell the difference....when i get home from school i'll post the link to the dev's site, there is also a metronome for ds that instead of entering the bpm you tap a button in the rythm you want the beat and it continues from that. I'll give you the links when i get home, DAMN FILTERS! XD

EDIT

As i said here's the links

I am positive there is a metronome as part of a larger homebrew DS program meant to teach basic music skills, but I can't remember the name unfortunately.
