I recently modded the Wii of a friend and used ModMii to do this (without a disk).
The Wii has the latest System Menu 4.3E.
With this installation I installed CFG as Backup Loader.
The HDD used as storage for the games is a Toshiba Stor.E Basics 500GB USB 2.0/3.0 formatted as NTFS.
The application I used to transfer the games onto the HDD is the one delivered with ModMii, WiiBackup Manager.

The problem I have is that if the HDD is plugged into the Wii and I start CFG it just freezes on the startup screen. I need to unplug the HDD before starting CFG and plug it in when it says that no disk is found.
I found in the topic (http://gbatemp.net/topic/328693-toshiba-store-basics-500gb-usb-30-0480a007/) that I needed to change the IOS used by CFG (I found I can do this by adding in the file meta.xml “ios=248”). Doing so didn’t change anything, CFG still freezes when HDD is plugged into the Wii.

Is there someone that can help me out with this problem? Because it is not good for the HDD to plug and unplug it all the time.

Thanks in advance for your kind help.

A Syscheck will be appreciated.

Meantine try WiiFlow 4.0.3 in my sig this one doesn't need a cIOS to start but needs it only when launching a Wii game or Wiiware,
If you want to use CFG you can try cIOS 222 (Hermes or Hermes-rodries) you should have this since u used modmii but the syscheck will prove this.

good luck

Thanks for your reply,
I didn't know about syscheck but found where to download it, tomorrow I was gonna visit my friend for a halloween party so will install it and let it run and post the results here.
Will also try cIOS 222 and WiiFlow and also keep you updated about the results.

I actually get the same problem with my 320GB toshiba model as well, though it's with GX. It doesn't freeze however, it just hangs on the "please insert hdd" until I unplug/replug it in.

As far as I know, it's because the hdd has a "wind-down" feature that turns off some of the internal processing to conserve power and/or reduce heat. I don't know if its possible to disable that, or for the Wii to properly set it up, or something inbetween.

I tried with the standard WiiFlow, it does open and shows all the games installed on the HDD but once I start a game it freezes :( (the light on the wiimote goes out).
I also tried to open CFG with cIOS 222 but nothing happend.
Could it be like pBullet said that there is some kind of system that shuts the HDD down to save power and/or prevent overheating and that the Wii can't start it again unless you unplug it first and then replug it?
Anyway here is a syscheck as asked, hope this can be bring us closer to a solution, thanks for wanting to take a look into it.
