Hi all,

So the other week I bought a used Nintendo 3ds for the sole purposes of homebrew. However, the system and sd card was formatted, but when I tried to use frogminer the application said that my 3ds already had CFW installed. How can I remove the previously installed CFW and install my own on version 11.9? I had to update the system to 11.9 to play games like Super Smash Bros. online.

Thanks

Turn on the console and keep pressed START button to check the version of ur Luma.
Which files did you have on the SD card of you´re 3ds??

It seems that Luma3ds is on version 6.6; also there are no files on the SD card besides the Luma config.bin and the Nintendo 3DS folder.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Just do the finalizing part of the guide again if you already have CFW, format system memory and the SD card doesn't wipe out CFW.

I tried doing the steps here: outlined by the 3DS Hacks Guide online.

This didn't seem to work, as there are no files on the SD card. I texted the guy who sold me this and he said that the reason why it may not work could be that I updated the system from 11.3 to 11.9 without knowing CFW was on there.

Well you can hold select while powering on the 3ds, it will tell you what luma version it is on, base on what you provided, you are are on A9LH, do the update to B9S then do the finalizing step, luma 9.1 support only B9S.

  1. You already have cfw and don't need Frogminer. Much easier.
  2. It's still the older A9LH→Update to B9S

Ok, I'm going to try it.

Hey guys, so I followed the tutorial and made sure that all the necessary files were put onto the SD Card, but I can't boot SafeB9SInstaller after holding start on powerup. It just takes me to the 3DS home menu like a normal startup.

Hold (SELECT) while booting. Does it still say Luma v6.6? If so, the Luma v7.0.5 from the SD is not found and anything on the SD is ignored.

Is the SD formatted FAT32? Can you access the SD with Data Management in System Settings? (Showing "free blocks").

The minimum you need on the SD is this:

SD:/arm9loaderhax.bin (Luma v7.0.5)
SD:/boot.firm (Luma v9.1)
SD:/boot9strap/boot9strap.firm
SD:/boot9strap/boot9strap.firm.sha
SD:/boot9strap/secret_sector.bin
(if new 3DS)
SD:/luma/payloads/SafeB9SInstaller.bin

Yes, it still says Luma v6.6... however, my SD card is using the FAT file system and I can see that my SD card has about 14,000 blocks free.

For whatever reason arm9loaderhax.bin is not found on the SD.
  • Copy everything from the SD to a computer and reformat the SD. If it is bigger than 32GB use guiformat.
  • Check the freshly formatted SD with h2testw.
    • If you get any errors replace the card.
    • If you get no errors delete the test files and copy the files needed for A9LH→B9S on the SD. Then try again.
Also try a different SD if possible.

Ok, I tried doing the h2testw and I got no errors, but I am still encountering the problem of not being able to open SafeB9SInstaller...

???
SD is found in Data Management and checked with h2testw which eliminates:
  • wrong filesystem
  • bad reader inside the console.
  • bad SD
Have you tried another SD yet? Only put arm9loaderhax.bin into the root of another, freshly formatted SD and see if you get v7.0.5 to loaded.

I have seen a similar case where everything seemed correct, but the boot.firm would not load from one SD because of… ?

Hey, just a recap: All the correct files are on my SD, but it still loads Luma3DS v6.6. I have tried reformatting and putting new copies of the files on the new SD, but still doesn't work. I have also tried using a separate SD, but that also doesn't work. What are some next steps that I should take?

  1. Copy everything off your SD card.
  2. Reformat the SD card with MiniTool Partition Wizard (free edition) with these settings:
  • Format: FAT32
  • Cluster Size: 32 KB
  • Partition: Primary
  • Disk: MBR
MiniTool Partition Wizard Software Tutorial Guide
  1. Delete Partition
  2. Initialize to MBR Disk -or- Convert GPT to MBR Disk (if it's in GPT Disk)
  3. Rebuild MBR
  4. Create a New Partition [ Create as: Primary | File System: FAT32 | Cluster Size: 32 KB ]
3. Since you already full Write + Verify this card in H2testw, this step doesn't pertain to you.
4. Do not copy your main setup back on the card just yet.
5. Attempt upgrading the custom firmware again: A9LH to B9S

The root of the SD Card

Thank you so much! I think the issue was not with the SD card, but rather with the fact that I was using different Luma3DS version files. Very excited to continue using CFW!
