I've noticed a lot of people both on the Internet and IRL think it's just another DS iteration (ala XL) Do you think this can cause problem with sales, since people don't know it's actually a new console, do you think there is there a chance the name will change closer to the release date?

Nintendo's simply gotten into the habit of releasing too many redesigns of the same handheld... plus a lot of people seem to be cheap as hell, and under the impression that buying a 6 year-old handheld should entitle them to play brand-new games.

No idea if the name will change, though... initially they said it was just a temporary name, but it now seems like everything is using it, including the official Nintendo sites, etc.

Not really. "3DS" hits the nail on the head. It's still the DS we all know and love, but the 3 is unmistakeable. The only confusion that might arise is "what happened to the DS2?"

When the adverts start hitting and all the non-game-interested market sees it they will hopefully explain that it's different
Yeah, at the moment everyone who I talk to at school have no idea that this is a whole new console; they think it's just another DS with added 3D support, not a new machine.

I'd rather have it named

GameBoy II or 2 or Two or whatever~

i just like GameBoy better

its the 3rd gen of DS
DS & DSL = 1st gen
DSi & DSi XL = 2nd gen
3DS = 3rd gen

its not a bad thing being in the DS family, DS is the most successful handheld console. & also DS means developer system (to nitnendo) & Dual screen (to everyone else) the 3ds seems to be both.

they cant call it gameboy because its not in that family, the GB Micro was the last gameboy.

I can see the unimformed buying the M3DS for it.

Its probably harder nowadays what with Apples yearly upgrades as well as Nintendo's own but I agree with others, when people see the games in action and the write ups in the mainstream press they'll soon figure out that its an all new system.

Like the DS it'll be the gamers who make this fly off the shelf initially so Nintendo doesn't need to worry about early sales, especially now it seems that gamers are taking to this better than they did with the DS. They just need to hit a good price point.

As pointed out above, Nintendo doesn't take their naming very lightly. There's many reasons for the name 3DS... just as the name Wii had a few meanings.

3DS will stick. And it won't be confused with anything else. Until Chinese rip-off companies come up with the 3BS, the EDS and the ThriiDiiS.

The DS has become immensily popular. It would be stupid of Nintendo to give this thing a brand new name. People would all be like "huh? wtf? ZOMG! Dat's nott a DS!! I wont buy iit!' (bad spelling and grammar intended). And just because they aren't familiar with the new name, they won't buy it.

I'd like to point out what happened with the Wii.

And look where that is now.
If they'd have the meanings behind it to call it the Nintendo Bullocks, they could pull it off, and people would buy it.

Now... if Nintendo would change their name... that would cause a riot.

I thought of the Wii, too. But that only sold well because it was really 'family-friendly', and because of Nintendo's marketing strategies, like you said. And the name was special (at least compared to Nintendo's previous consoles).

You can be so annoying sometimes. Did you even read the post you replied to? The 3DS is not a 3rd generation DS, it's a new generation of Handheld console.

Why post such misinformation?

You also forgot the most obvious meaning of 3DS = 3 Dimensional Screen, while at the same time capitalizing on the well known recognition of the DS brand.
