I recently tried two (much anticipated) racing games:
- Moto Racer 4
- ATV Drift & Tricks
and I must say I'm very disappointed at how poorly they play on the Switch: they have framerate issues at some points, the graphics look bad and the gameplay frustrating.
Is the Switch so weak that these games perform poorly or did the developers just release them without proper optimization?

Most likely problem is that the games are crap from start.

Likely poor optimization. Take a look at Warframe on the Switch, genuinely looks almost as good as the PS4 version of Warframe, only that it runs at 30 fps and has some lower resolution textures. I'm pretty astounded by how much power can be squeezed out of the switch.

most of the time it comes down to developers not creating a seperate set of lower resoltion graphic. the switch doesnt do 4k, but they still make it calculate 4k and scale that down

Well is the price that you pay for portability, at the moment I play more my switch for that point than my xbox one.

Most Developers Just don't care about switch or do a lazy job of porting multiplatform games for it. just look at wolfenstein or doom and you realise how it should have been done. also the game you mentioned are not that high end and struggle with same problems even on base consoles like xbox one ( non s) or fat ps4.

When developers actually put more than half-assed effort, you get good results. But with games like ARK Survival Evolved looking like an N64 game or this running badly, you have lazy devs to blame.

Poor optimization. Skyrim and Doom are excellent ports that take advantage of the Switch's capabilities.

This is what happens when developers don't optimize. Look at the statue at 2:04.

Doom not so much because its like a slideshow to how slow the framerate is on a game thats meant to be played at 60 fps, skyrim runs fine though
im going to throw lego city undercover here too, long load times and frame rate drops all over the place

nba 2k18 on switch looks nothing like pc and console, but its still looks and plays GOOD. Racing games on switch are worse than ps2

Nintendo has always been the most underpowered choice since the Wii. Still, portable Doom
Fixed that for you

No need to exaggerate just to make your point

I thought PS4/5 and Xbox One emulation would be kind of easy since they basically just a PC
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
    they sorta are a pc
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They haslve dedicated on board chips that aren't tweaked like x64/x32 afaik
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
but its a custom os for both of them

    designed for only specific hardware

so you have to learn to emulate that specific hardware which isn't as easy as you'd think

It's a locked down Linux distro basically
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think the only custom hardware is to do with the SSD and a security chip
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Probably combined in one chip
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They place married security chips onto boards iirc

Didn't see much need for a console, all the advantages have kind of disappeared
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
the ps3 used to support installing linux because the cpu was so powerful
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Then the games are $70 and they want to reboot and refresh the same game every year
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
The ps3 was always Linux they just found a way to make it open source

I'm avoiding buying from the big 3 at all atm

At one point PC game pads where poorly supported, loading a game had setup, it was complicated. Now it's almost as easy as a console.

nintendo needs to up their game soon

Yeah even bt support for Xbox one controllers are just as easy as pairing

considering the steamdeck can emulate the switch (yikes) theres almost 0 reason to buy the switch apart from playing online and using cartridges
