Sony has confirmed its intentions to offer a premium for-pay version of the PlayStation Network. The name is slightly different from what was initially reported, and will now be called PlayStation Plus. Online play will still be available for all PSN members, free and paying. PlayStation Plus offers a number of added perks, though:

Exclusive in-game DLC and other content

Free full games, changing each month

Early access to demos and betas

Auto-patching feature, which will detect, download and install updates

PSN+ will be available later this month for $49 annually, or $18 for three months. Subscribers will receive Wipeout HD, a demo for inFamous, Fieldrunners, Age of Zombies, Rallycross and a handful of themes and avatars for free throughout July.

Don't forget you will only own them for the duration of your subscription. Once you cancel your subscription, you no longer have them.

Great definition of free. You can see a situation where you sign up for a year, get a fair amount content but then are permantly tied into the yearly fee in order to keep that content, awesome!

I think every month you get a free full PSN game, a free PSOne Classic, and a few free Minis on top of demos and stuff. You'll keep these for as long as you want.

There's really nothing to criticize here, it's an optional payment feature that you don't need (unlike the 360 which is only half as fun without Xbox Live Gold). You can still play your multiplayer and stuff without PSN+.

Live needs to really be restructured. It's getting less features for higher the cost than PSN+.

Anybody else see this as an unwanted subscription fee? Most of the extra features aren't that attractive other than the "free" game. Auto-Patch? Seriously? If its an online game it will tell you to patch anyway. If it means you get a background install then HOT DIGGETY DOG! SOMETHING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE ANYWAY!!!

Well, yeah. Exactly like any other service like cable, internet, Netflix, various music sites, web hosting, etc. So what's your point other than you apparently expect Sony to give you infinite games for some token fee?
