Hacking Playing mounted XCI from USB HDD

So I've been playing XCI games mounted from my external HDD in SX OS and they run super slow, load screens take over a minute, and I've noticed some frame drops in games that normally wouldn't have this problem. Is this normal when playing games from a USB HDD? Or is something wrong with my USB drive or Switch?

Frame rate would have to do with the HDD, as it is reading off the drive, scanning of the drive can take a while if you have a lot.
