Nothing in that OP says anything about a release date, and digging deeper seems to confirm that it's leaps and bounds more involved. Like I said, this is a gift for my less than tech savvy wife, and she doesn't know the difference between EmuNand and the band Toto.
Seems a shame to waste money when a free solution is just around the corner. Also if you do change your mind, you'll find the resale value of the Sky will drop through the floor.

If you're determined to buy a Sky, you could also wait a few weeks until the free solution is easily available, and get a super cheap Sky off people who don't want it anymore. Or even just buy a blue button or red button right now for a bit cheaper, assuming your wife isn't desperate to play Triforce heroes or barbie.

My biggest hangup besides the ambiguous nature of "just around the corner" is that the free solution seems terribly complicated, using programs and terms even I can't wrap my head around. Is it really worth waiting when there's a good chance I won't even be able to figure out how tos et things up?

It seems in your case that you've already answered that question. If you want a foolproof method to run your roms without all of the mess that comes along with the 'free' solutions then keep to your guns.

Requirements for setting up exploits and CFW etc:

1. Basic computer knowledge (you should be able to use Windows Explorer to move files around and understand how folders work)

2. Ability to follow instructions (don't go trying different things than written in a tutorial because you can't be bothered to do everything it says).

3. Ability to ask questions (if something that the tutorial said should be on the screen isn't, you should have the patience to ask questions and not forge ahead anyway)

If you have all three of these, there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to do it.

Oh and patience - you should read several tutorials before starting so you know if you are using the right one for your situation, not some out of date one or one that doesn't pertain to your situation (eg not your firmware, old 3ds instead of new, end result is not the same result you're after)

Yeah, I intend to. It's not as if I'm losing money I need. I -am- interested in the free solution being worked on, but not being especially savvy in the programs/hacks/lingo it just comes off as very intimidating. Hopefully someone makes an idiot proof guide when the dust has settled. I can always just get a second 3DS or give the Sky to a family member or something.

You could always start small and just get some homebrew working to gain confidence in being able to move files around and follow tutorials. After you've played with it for a while you'll see how easy it all is, and what you're missing out on from ignoring it :-)

Maybe. =P But who knows how many issues are going to be popping up in the early days of the new exploit. Plus, it's more my wifes 3DS than my own and I'd not want to mess around with it unless I was confident everything would work out.

I agree with your last post, though, I -will- look at the free option if someone puts up an easy to follow guide. Getting the Sky in the meantime isn't going to break my bank.

It's the same argument from the days back when modding the Wii was the thing. You could go the free software route with a learning curve and more risk or go the way of the modchip and simply have something that just *works*. Personally, I know what I'm doing so I softmodded my Wii, but if I were going to give a Wii to someone to operate I'd just chip it. More practical if they don't know what they're doing. It all comes down to what you want and what you can handle.

Ok good luck with your Sky and I hope your wife enjoys it :-) In the meantime of you turn off wifi on her console you can reduce the risk of her accidentally updating, and then not getting a choice about the free stuff later when it comes out.

Funny you say that, the reason I didn't just get a Gateway was because she want and upgraded, so yeah.

I actually paid lots extra for my modded Wii as it seemed too intimidating then  The guy sold it to me with GameCube controllers and lots of GC games, so I felt justified at the timeas it was way cheaper than buying a GameCube and a bunch of games. I feel embarrassed now that I was too scared to try and do it myself back then ... so I do understand how Verranicus feels!!

I don't think it has anything to do with being scared it's all about what you need in the situation. I wouldn't give my girlfriend a softmodded 3DS due to the fact you can easily brick it if you don't know what you're doing.

In what way can she brick it? If she doesn't know what she's doing she probably isn't going to be installing system titles or anything. Worst that could happen is she might update it, or visit data management and get all the CIAs wiped.

Everything on queue will be completed on or by Jan 10th.

Please feel free to email us for any inquiries.

Happy New Years!

Its been three different dates now... Im kinda getting confused...I sent them an email on this matter.

I didn't get a chance to order from them before they closed new orders/vanished, but even I think it's a bit strange for the whole site to be replaced by that one page.

I sent the payment and my order its not cancelled, also the pre shipping label is there. They said worst case scenario they will do a massive refund.

Something is up with sky3ds
"We are not accepting order for the Sky3ds anymore at this stage - please do not email us asking us when you can order - thanks."

Maybe a big crackdown on flashcarts?
At least they dropped the dstwo+ to $30, but at this rate, I wouldn't take any chances.

The factory can't make enough cards to meet demands, and a bunch of deliveries got stuck in customs (that's what happened to modchipsdirect).

Edit:
Stolen from reddit:
Just got a reply back from them, said they took it down due to the number of inquiries regarding the Sky3DS+ and that the orders were still in queue.
