I have a sapphire radeon 4850 and i was wondering if i wanted to cross fire would have i have to buy that same model or would me buying a XFX 4850 work with it ?

You'd be better off buying the same model, but it's possible to make it work with another model as long as they both share the same architecture.

Well, atm you can mix different graphic cards together

There will have no problems.
Just take care about the memory in each, if one is a 1Go gfx card and the other a 512Mo card, the system will use the lower value.
So only 512Mo will be use on each card.

for the most part you can crossfire within the same series. so 4850 can crossfire with a 4670, 4770, 4830,another 4850, 4870, 4890 e.t.c so you can just grab the xfx4850. brand doesnt matter.
