And do we require the DLC downloaded in the Wii U?

Pretty sure it's the former. No replacements.

Also, the DLC characters in their entirety are all in the latest update for Smash 4, the DLC just makes them unlock. So no, you don't need the DLC.

Hey! Excuse me if this is a very noobish question, but how exactly I'm supposed to use the files you have shared?
Maybe my specific situation makes it harder or it can also be that one is supposed to know how to use another tool that you considered obvious and didn't bother mentioning, but your directions seem rather vague to me.
If it helps: I have the original disk and had the server files that were leaked a couple of weeks ago. But my knowledge of the wii u homebrew scene begins and ends with loadiine. If I need to use some tool to get the game patched a little direction would be appreciated.

You need to use sd cafiine to patch the necessary files.
Another method is to use codes to replace characters with dlc characters. Deathwolf shared these codes in the gba wii u codes section ages ago.

so then in that case, how do you go about properly patching the game? I've tried applying them to my loadiine copy and for some reason, updates past v32 cause my game to fail to boot..

You might not be aware, but there is no such thing as 'free' DLC In Smash 4. The topic IS piracy. Those links above are to copyrighted content too.

for users wondering what this "solution" is : what I understood, it's not a way to unlock DLC. it's a patch of an existing DLC to make the game think you bought another one (like a cheat code would replace a character by another).
This is NOT FREE DLC. just a patch, or cheat code.

well. when i was told GBAtemp was a shitehole with really abusive mods that enforce really contradictory rules, i didn't think it was true.
