It's been over two solid years since we first caught wind of this here gaming handheld, and while we were initially led to believe that finalized units would be in the hands of emulation junkies long before now, we suppose loyalists are finding that late really is superior to never. After months and months of "almosts," the first wave of final Pandora handhelds are shipping out, with many community followers posting up unboxing shots as they come. We're also expecting a flood of homebrewed applications to start surfacing as more of these filter out, so be sure and drop us a line if you discover and / or create something otherworldly. Plenty more shots in the links below -- you know, if you're still patiently awaiting the arrival of your own.

I'm guessing a super emulator, homebrew system.

I backed out of buying this because I needed to get a netbook first for my final year of grade school (ASUS eeepc 1201n if you're wondering, and its pretty much awesome). I'll come back to this after I finish my finals.

It's pretty powerful for on the go gaming. Yeah, I wouldn't call it a watered down netbook, but I'd say its to a netbook what a netbook is to a notebook. Catch my drift? You can do pretty much all things a netbook can do to a degree. You can surf the net, play videos, play some open source games. It's basically a small computer. It sports full gaming controls and is capable of fullspeed n64 emulation, along with all consoles under it (including PSX). Once it gets a strong community under its belt, you an look forward to see lots great development.

If you just saw this and are wanting one right now, good luck. There were 4000 on preorder for like a year and a half so there's none left, it's gonna take at least another 6 months until the next batch of 4000 come in.

They actually haven't started shipping them yet. They said they don't even have the cases since the ones they received were faulty, and the next shipment might take longer due to Chinese New Years.
I just want to see how well these can run N64 and PS1 games, then I'll decide whether to buy one or not.

First mass-produced Pandora units will not be in the wild until March.

it's actually a really interesting system. It's like a DS, with a touch 800x480 screen that's the same size as the screen on the PSP. It has several projects going for it with already impressive results, like a psx, n64, and I believe a dreamcast emulator is in the works too by someone.

Plus you got ports and original projects going for it.

For one, they don't sell them in stores. Its done solely through email. Secondly, even if they sold them through other means, the fact that it can emulate consoles doesn't make it illegal. You're computer can emulate N64, correct? Does that make it illegal? No. These emulators are not made by the Pandora team, but by programmers that make emulators specifically for the Pandora, just like a PC programmer would make emulators for PC's.

there was a phone can't remember the name sold that had built in emulation software for nintendo games. nintendo threw a big tantrum over it and sued them

Does anybody have any idea how hard somthing like this would be to make, as not a Nintendo sized company?

Stop complaining.

I know this emulates up to the Dreamcast, but is PSX/N64 emulation any good? Like full speed? If so, I'd consider it.

A very interesting piece of technology that has gotten my interest, but not $300 worth of my interest. If I had lots of extra cash to spend and bought everything I'm desiring right now, I'd consider it. But at the moment, not even in range.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
