From what I've read, it may be in the demise timeline, where link failed in OOT. So possibly a sequel of the first Zelda games.
It's all just speculation at this point. However, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild would be the first 3D console game to take place on the Fail Timeline, so I'm skeptical.

This is actually a legitimate concern of mine. I'm hoping it's more like a typical Zelda game than every generic open world PC game I've played. Not that games like Ark: Survival are bad, but it's not what I want in a Zelda game.
