Yes you can use SD card with DML or Devolution
No the HDD must be Fat32 Formatted and you can use DM or Devolution
P.S. Devolution won't work without having Retail Discs (check is done once per game)
DM/DML don't have this kind of security check
For Devolution you need the loader.bin or boot.dol to launch with USB loaders or HBC
For DM/DML you need BC6 and DM(L) wad installed
GC controller is needed for both

Check official Devo and DM threads in hacking section for more info

Too add to this great information you could also download dios mios booter or wii flow( check for the latest version) these can boot gc games from a FAT 32 32 bit cluster hdd since u can only use up to a 2gb sd which only hold 1-2 games at the most. also if youre using an external harddrive make sure you store your gc games in the first partition, if youre harddrive is partitioned. Dios mios booter and wii flow also has an option for a no disc boot.

Not that this has anything to do with loading GC games, but loading Wii games from WBFS partitions has long been deprecated.
FAT32 has been the de facto standard since November 2009. If you format your hard drive to FAT32, you can load both GC and Wii games off it.

never knew that honestly. i used old forums when i first soft modded my wii and saw wbfs format. I may format my external harddrive again to have one single drive instead of a partitioned one now. thx
