Homebrew Official Wii Youtube Channel will soon no longer be supported, is there a Hombrew App to replace it?

It seems a bit of mission, but perhaps using one of the linux on wii distros might work... never been motivated to do that yet

Yeah, too complicated for everyone and i don't think it would actually work.
Honestly all it takes would be an update on Wiimc/Wiimc+. Where the geniuses at ? all we have to do is mess around with the "online.xml" file in the wiimc folder.
We can bring back youtube on the wii, seriously.

I think this topic should be more about bringing back youtube on the wii than talking about other ways to have youtube on your tv, right ?

The problem with the YT channel is mostly that the web is moving to different codecs and those aren't implemented on the Wii YT channel. You would essentially need to make a new app.

The thing is, youtube wasn't discontinued on the wii really, it's just that the youtube channel used Youtube flash version, and that got discontinued on every devices that used it.
So yeah, you're right that there is nothing to be done to fix the problem on the actual youtube channel. But like i said, Wiimc's youtube should be totally fixable.
I wish i knew how to implement youtube to a website in ".php" because basically thats all it takes.

RiiConnect24's already stated that they don't plan to revive this channel, so it's up to some independent developers in the community. Opening the channel gives me Error Code 20110.

That's a good idea, Hangman. I decided to go for it, and my project can be found here: https://github.com/Winter-Knight/wiimc-youtube

I consider it Beta. It works, but it's barely been tested. I encourage you guys to try it out. Perhaps somebody with bandwidth would be willing to provide an URL for everybody.

Looks good! I hope more progress can be made on this eventually that it does not require a web server. Thank you for this.

I'm considering that. It would require releasing an updated version of WiiMC with https support, since Youtube only accepts https connections.
IOS and the Wii's HB libraries do support SSL connections, it should be quite easy.

@Winter-Knight I'm new to Python, when I tried to run youtube.py, this happened--
Code:
No search query entered.
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/home/lukehasawii/cgi/youtube.py", line 37, in <module>
   query = str(form["query"].value)
File "/home/lukehasawii/cgi/cgi.py", line 540, in __getitem__
   raise KeyError, key
KeyError: 'query'
Do you know what I did wrong?

Yeah, I see 2 problems. One is that the script does not exit properly when no form variables are provided. I've just fixed that and uploaded a new version. It shouldn't have traceback anymore.

"No search query entered" is the message when no query or watch values are provided. When youtube.py is provided with a search query, (.../cgi/youtube.py?query=mitt+romney+style) it will search Youtube and provide results in a text file, which WiiMC can read and display. When it is provided with a watch value (.../cgi/youtube.py?watch=8h795bTNqaU) your web browser or WiiMC will start playing that youtube video. If it is not provided either then that cryptic message shows up. I'll work on making the messages more user friendly.

Thanks! I'll try it now.

@Winter-Knight hmm... it still doesn't work, now it says this--
Code:
File "/home/lukehasawii/cgi/youtube.py", line 7
    <!DOCTYPE html>
    ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
EDIT: Oops! I just downloaded the wrong file. Nevermind!

Wow man, that's great, this is a huge step in the right direction ! i wish i could try it right now but i'm on vacation. I'll have to wait until august 9th.
Could anybody let me know if it works for them ?

By the way did you try to decipher the way that youtube used to work on wiimc previously ?
The wiimc site used to host "youtube.php" but not anymore, it gives an error.

i don't know much about php and stuff, but wouldn't it be easier to try and implement a new "youtube.php" on another site ?
Well, not easier i guess, since we don't have the source code, and we don't really know what was in that file exactly

anyway, i'm really glad that someone is trying to get that working ! that's awesome. I love Wiimc

EDIT

Oh yeah, that would be perfect, i missed that message

Sweet! This is awesome to hear. I'm going to give this a try, but first, I need to teach myself how to set up a web server. :P
I'm going to figure that out and give this a try and let you know how it goes,

Our YouTube channel is no longer supported by Google, and after someone potentially revives YouTube on Wii, you somehow feel the need to post that here of all places as a response? In case you haven't been paying attention, this isn't the only way in which the Wii scene is still not only breathing but also making progress. If you have nothing useful or thankful to say, go be a bag of dicks somewhere else.

Proof that the Wii scene is at the brink of death.
What do you mean ? Sounds like a pretty stupid statement to me. Youtube flash version was discontinued on every devices, this has nothing to do with nintendo or the Wii.
And the "proof" that the "scene" ain't dying is that we're actually trying to bring back youtube right now.

Beside that, there is alot of emulators for the Wii still in progress, such as Not64, WiiSXR, emgba and etc. Sooo..
