Update: I updated my firmware to a custom firmware someone released for my driver. Burned at 16x I wound up with 60%, but burned at 2x I got one that came out at 85%.

Hi, I am very new to the wii modding scene. I have not yet recieved my chip yet (i just got the wii 3 days ago) but i do plan on ordering the d2pro9 v2 asap. I would like to share some of my results though. Now i can not vouch for any dirty disc errors because i can not test them yet however i can show you the DVDInfoPro graph of what i got.

Media: Tayo Yuden DVD-R about a year old since i have a stack of like 99 from a year ago.
Drive: PBDS DVD+-RW DH-16W1S (Im on my brothers vista pc idk anything about it. Its a cheap $400 dell. i think this is it w/e it means)
ISO: SUPER MARIO GALAXY
Burn Speed 4x

This isnt photo shopped... idk if many people have been able to achieve such high rating... but like i said, just a normal pc with some nice media, seems to pass quality check. However DRE still remains untested, once i get the chip installed i will let you know

how did you burn smg on a cd-r?

Firstly id like to say i use an unnamed brand of dvd-r's for my wii and everyother system secondly it makes me laugh when people say how can a dvd ruin my dvd lense if it isnt touching...when we refer to ruin the lense we mean that the laser has to work harder to read the information than it should and it stresses it eventualy causing it to stop reading anything .thirdly i have used the same brand dvd-r wich is the unnamed brand for every system i use being gamecube,ps2 and xbox in which i burn at 2x speed, i have never had tto replace a laser on any systems and never had problems with my wii or any other system readig this data. thats it have a nice day

Here are my results from burning Okami on some Memorex DVD-R discs (RITEKF1, which are 2nd class, according to Jalaneme's link). My burner is a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160H6S CP91 (ATA)

Here's a burn at 56x speed. (Imgburn goes by CD speeds for some reason)

Here's the same image burned at 24x speed. There's a huge improvement, but its still at 0% quality. I haven't been able to test either one since my chip is still in the mail.

Also, it tells me my drive can support some advanced features. Are any of these worth trying?

Edit: Got rid of Imgburn and decided to try Infrarecord instead

It seems to have a seizure at anything below 8x speed, but loses quality as it gets faster. I tried one more burn on 10x speed just in case.

Success! Quality over 0%. Looks like I'll have to get another drive though. Sucks, since this one is only two years old.

I just got a new laptop, and it came with a Pioneer DVDRW DR-KD08HB drive. Interestingly enough, that drive couldn't be checked by DVDinfo pro, so I had to use my crappy light-on to test it. The results are much better.

Since me and Shuny have bad burns when burning at a low speed on the same media, it's safe to assume that Memorex discs aren't designed to be burned below 8x speed.

So, how do sony DVD-/+rw work?? just if we can use DVD'rw's because unless Ativa DVD+'s are a reputable brand then I don't have any good dvd's

Edit: Oh, and is this a good DVD drive to wright on? ,I just need to be able to burn at over 70% for under $35.

Every modchip except the Wiinja v2 supports DVDRWs. You should try a few test burns on those discs. If those discs aren't good enough, you can get a 100 pack of Taiyo Yudens on Amazon for around $30. They're supposed to be some of the best discs out there. I found my pack of Memorexs on sale at Office Max last year for $10, so you might want to check store flyers for any sales.

And yes, that's a great burner.

Thank you vary much, now I'm informed ^-^

just to get this straight a dvd-/+RW if burned over 70% quality won't give to much strain my wii's laser and I won't have to worry about it burning out anytime soon.. right?

lol, Yeah but a wii disc will wear out the wii eventually to.. kinda like a 100% disc but we can't get that.

I would highly recommend spending the extra what $5 for taiyo yudens... They are worth ordering online... If you go back to page 3 (i believe) look at my screenshot of my scan. 99.2%... well worth it in my opinion. So if any of you buy a drive off newegg you might as well go ahead and get a 100 stack of the yudens.

99.19% XP

Sure I'll buy some, but I really need to buy the whole thing for under $35 anyone know where I can get maybe 15 taiyo yudens discs and a decent drive for that?
