Mother (NES) was planned for release in US/Europe but never came out. There are 100% translations and is known as Earthbound Zero.

Wrong, it did come out, theres an official english release of Earthbound for the NES but so very few numbers we're released that it never really made a big impact on the market. You can actually find the official, english (Non patched) versions of this game over the internet. I even have a copy of it on my Nintendo DS. At any rate, due to the short number of games that actually came out, it is one of the more rarer Nintendo games out there.

Wrong Double phale.

Earthbound Zero is not a translation of Mother (The Japanese title), but an unreleased official Nintendo prototype.

Nintendo came very close to releasing it in the US, so close that they had completed the translation and done some other things and even burned the EPROM to an NES cartridge. For whatever reason, they decided not to publish it stateside, and the prototype card ended up being forgotten about...

Fast forward to about 1998 or so, and somebody had gotten their hands on the prototype and were auctioning it on eBay. The winner of the auction refused to allow the NES emulation community to dump it unless he was paid for it, stating the value of such a rarity would decrease if dumped to a ROM file.

A fund raiser was held by two guys named Demi and Wildbill, who paid the buyer and got it dumped. However, the dominant NES emulator of the time was NESticle, and due to its inaccurate emulation couldn't run the game. So the game was hacked to allow it, but Nintendo had put in a checksum that would crash the game in two places (Complete with a "This is an illegal copy of blah blah blah).

So another hacker named TrelaneQ disabled the checksum routine, and all was well. To avoid confusion with the SNES Earthbound, Demi put "Zero" at the end of the title.

There's actually several changes from the japanese version, such as the ability to dash when moving around. And despite being a prototype, it is a fully complete game (A Holy Grail so far as game prototypes go). I actually went through it myself when the ROM was first distributed after it was dumped.

Sorry for the long winded reply, but I was around when all this happened, so yeah.
Wait no I wasn't.

No, you fail.

There really is no such as Earthbound Zero, it's just an edited title screen (modified by the dumper) so there's no confusion between this version and the SNES version.
Mother for Famicon was translated to the NES as Earthbound. It was fully translated by Nintendo, however they decided to not release it for whatever reason.

Mother 3 Fan Translation looks as it's coming along rather well.
I'm digging the frequent updates!

You all fail... I wrote, programmed, and even created the microchips that EarthBound Zero (Mother 1) was put on!

I am the God of the EarthBound/Mother universe, and sent Ninten, Ness, and Lucas on their missions to save their world!

/rant

Ok, there was no EARTHBOUND ZERO. As stated before, Zero was added to the title to end confusion. And to further end confusion, we all shall now refer to the games as follows:

Mother
Mother 2
Mother 3

End of discussion... now, back to the topic at hand... what do you think of the last update on the translation of Mother 3?

So there is a clean unhacked dump of the NES one? I should look for it...

Just search for Mother.

Actually, that illustrates what game companies should do to avoid piracy -- from here on, every game should be named using a single common word. And every game system and game company, too, so you have nothing to search for.

But anyway, why would you want the clean unhacked dump of the original NES one? My understanding is that it's unplayable past a certain point.

That's why I didn't like the name HD-DVD. Just about impossible to find information in a search engine about it, as most don't allow case-sensitive searches.

Anyone know how the translation is going on?

And those posts just confused me over and over again...
Right, I worked it out by reading Wikipedia. You know you could've just quoted that in the first place? Anyway, I had no idea Mother was practically done for a western release. I would've played it already if I had known that.

Maybe I'll play it at some point.

Honestly, as I recall it's not that great. There's a reason why it never saw a western release. Quite a lot of aimless wandering around... It's mostly famous now for being the game that came before Earthbound / Mother 2.

I would have to concur with Ruri. While it was still charming, the game required a lot of leveling up, and, impressively, had a HUGE map. If you really want to play it, and play it quickly, but still feel like you got the experience from the game, my suggestion is to hack it. Firstly, with Tomato's patch from starmen.net.

Next, if your comfortable hex editing, head over to the EB-0 Data Crystal Page

I set my encounter rates to 1/3 that of the original.

On to the enemy data. I set a few select enemies to give me 65536 exp. That way I could return to them and level up my allies.

Those few things made the game MUCH more enjoyable. No grinding, much less interruption, and less frustration on my part.

After this, I injected it into my Wii using Kirby's Adventure as a host. It was a wonderful experience.

Just a little something else I'd like to note

. You may notice that the B button as been assigned a run function. Something you might not notice is that it increases the speed of ALL sprites on the map. If I had to guess, it speeds up the draw timer by halving the delay between frames. Just a little something interesting

back on topic for a bit, they have been kinda trying to put together a flashcart list with cart that have been personally verifyed working by someone as of late for mother3. If you feel like it could could apply the menu patch to the game and then go see if gamesaves are working and post your resolts.

I hate RPG's HATE then, a couple of days ago I noticed I had earthbound in a snes emulator.
I decided to gave it a whirl.............. my god this game is amazing. It's so well written! I love the normal setting of things too!

The question I want to ask, Is Earthbound Zero worth a blast?

Consider me Excited for Mother 3.
