finally unveiled on the 26th. 480 is going to directly compete with the 5870 at $499, the 470 competing with the 5850 at $349.

its quite disappointing for the most part they have similar performance compared to their competitors, sometimes beating the competing cards by 10-20% but also losing that much in a couple games. some think that ati loses a bit of performance at higher resolutions as the 480 ships with 1.5gb~ while the 5870 ships with 1gb. though ati are bringing out 2gb 5870's soon.

but then again, huang already stated that nvidia are looking at a more work orientated platform with the fermi chipset. heck the 480 folds 4x as fast as the 295.

its going to be interesting to see how ati respond. they already are bringing out that 2gb 5870. hopefully a decent sized price drop again.

I'll wait for a ATI price drop.

Then get an ATI card. Since right now they are releasing the high ends which I probably wouldn't need.

Though I still need to build a comp first.

I'll pick up a GF card with they get the later cards, maybe around the 200's because the kinks will be worked out and as usual, price drops of the GTX200's later on if I decide I want one.

I heard in CPC magazine that ATI have an extra project of gfx cards they're holding back until they see Nvidia's competition. Now that I see that Nvidia aren't really competing as much as keeping up, I wonder if ATI really will try and top the competition again.

these graphics cards are cool. take 4 of them and you can make a oven out of them. They eat a power plant for breakfast...that's crazy

My GTX260 already killed a PSU, I can't even think what those beasts would do

I'm getting one of those next year

For now the GTX260 is more than enough.

The same could be said for ATI - comparing to the 5870 doesn't mean much when they've got another line expected to take over the the coming couple of months (which had previously been held back until Nvidia showed what Fermi was capable of).

But still... look at the little gains the 480 gets and compare it to the level of power and heat inside it (according to the review at least). If the 480 is that inefficient, I'd hate to see what the 490 would do (assuming it's dual GPU like the 295 was).

Haha, with a BIOS update it gets to 84°C idle!

I always get one or two generation old top line card for next to nothing and they do great. I got a 8800GTS G92 for free which plays like a underclocked GTS 250.

thats because the 8800GTS G92, 9800GTX+, and GTS250 are all the exact same cards...

its the exact same shit
oh wow they reduced it by 10nm, still the same exact card

read any review, they criticize nvidia for releasing the same card 3 times now trying to trick consumers into thinking they were getting an upgrade, the whole 9000 series are just rebranded 8000 series cards

gt300 series isn't their flagship for this gen though. 9 series was their effort against ati's hd3000 series. the gt300 series isn't really trying to compete with anything besides ati's oem/low profile/budget cards.

most people should know the gt300 isnt an upgrade, whereas cards like the 9800gt/s/x, 9600gt and whatever else that was decent from the 9000 were marketed as direct upgrades to their 8 series. when they were basically all die shrinks and rebrands.
