Hi All,

I have recently converted my NA Wii to Europe with @XFlak 's help. I have dumped all my NTSC-U/C games to the hard drive. I am loading these using USBLoaderGX. The vast majority work full screen/speed/colour, when using Force PAL60, but I'm having issues with the following:

House of the Dead Overkill*
Lost in Shadow
Madworld
No More Heroes
Smash Bros Brawl
Wario Ware Smooth Moves
Wii Play

All of these games fail to load using PAL60, I just get a black screen and (IIRC) the wii remote disconnects. I have no choice but to cut the power to get the console to respond again. The reason I am using PAL60, as many of you know, is because the Wii does not support RGB in NTSC mode. If I select Force NTSC for any game it boot successfully but displays entirely in red (S-Video), which is obviously not a viable way to play!

One exception to this is HOTD Overkill (hence the *) which refuses to boot under any circumstances.

I have tried many (if not all) the video modes and nothing seems to do the trick. I have read a little about IOS/CIOS and wonder if this might help, but haven't a clue how to set this up or what option to choose.

Failing all else I guess I could just play the European versions.

Little help?

As you have discovered, some games don't play nice with forced video mode.
You can try problem games with VIDTV Patch both enabled and disabled.
If you want to play games in PAL, why not play the PAL versions? Most of them run in PAL60 already. You are just causing a lot of extra work and potential compatibility issues by doing things this way.
If it's an option, component is better quality than RGB (and has better compatibility, as 480p isn't region specific)

Thanks for your reply. VidTV Patch doesn't seem to help, I tested this earlier on one or two (but I'll go back and test some more games).

I am open to playing the PAL versions, I guess I'm interested in learning what possibilities there are and what settings do what. If you know of a list that says which games support PAL60 that would be helpful.

I do have a component cable, but as all my flat screens are higher resolution, they of course make the image quite blurry even in 480p. I am using RGB Scart on my CRT which gives a much better picture.

To my surprise after a bit more research I have solved my own problem. Solution is to set video to Force PAL60 and Dol Video Patch to All. Miraculously all the above games now work.

For reasons unknown setting Dol patch to “on” or any other settings don’t work. Would be interested to know the difference between these options.

Brief testing shows all working well with only a couple glitches. SSBB some of the graphics show a black bar on the right side when characters flash on screen before a fight. Not bad enough to deter play.

Mad World locked up when I hit the home button in the save select screen.

All around very pleased with the result. I credit this explanation of what those video modes do by @Cyan :

https://gbatemp.net/threads/quick-newbie-questions-here.155449/post-4793099

Video Mode : used to change the Wii's video setting before launching the game. You can set the Wii's memory to match your console's region (no changes applied), disc region (if you play a PAL game it put the Wii in PAL), or force any move (PAL50, PAL60, PAL480p, NTSC(480i), NTSC480p).
There's an additional setting "Region Patch" which is equivalent/shortcut to "console's region + dol video patch ON".

dol video patch : used to change the game's video setting. Most games have all video mode listed in their "compatible mode". When you launch a game, it checks the current Wii video mode in memory and use the corresponding video mode to display the picture. If you used "Video Mode : Force NTSC 480p" then the game will see that the Wii is in/requests NTSC 480p and will choose "NTSC480p" from it's list of compatible video mode output.
But some games don't have all video mode information and fallback to one of the video mode it knows. if you put "Video Mode" to NTSC480p, but the game has only "PAL480i" modes information, you can use "dol video patch" setting to replace the "PAL480i" information inside the game to the value selected in "Video Mode" setting above. Now, the game will see that the Wii request "NTSC480p" and will find a matching "NTSC480p" video mode information in the game compatible mode and will set the video output to NTSC progressive.

Dol Video Patch is needed only if you force a Video mode that the games don't know. You usually never need it. it's needed only to force few games to display in 480p (Mario Marty 8, MotoGP8, MadWorld USA, to name a few).

Sneek video patch : Another (additional) method of patching video mode. shouldn't be needed. don't bother with it unless you know a game require it.

viDTV patch : I don't remember. It seems it affects only NTSC-U and NTSC-J games (based on their GameID, xxxE or xxxJ).

Country string fix : Fix some Japanese games not displaying Japanese font.
