Hi all I've just modded my Wii U following the pinned Noob guide. Although now the more i read the more concerned i am I'm a little worried i don't fully understand the whole process.

I'm not new to modding at all I've done lot's of my consoles most recently my N3DS XL.

What i have read about Haxchi/CBHC and potential bricks concerns me, i know I'll brick if i format the system or remove my VC game.

If i remove CBHC i think that removes the risk of bricking through formatting but does that prevent a brick through removing the VC Title as well? (Or a title with the same ID gets installed)

If i remove CBHC and just use Haxchi can i still install updates and DLC?

I'll keep reading as much as possible it's all working for now i just need to get my head around what's what.

At least on the 3DS there's always a fallback to restoring NAND i wonder if we will get a solution like this?

Or a CFW that blocks system format or removal of certain VC games...

If you remove CBHC using CBHC Installer, it deletes string from syshax.xml and sysmenu.xml
[I think i changed something here]
After you uninstalled CBHC, reboot Wii U to see if it still requests for DS VC game on boot.
[If it boots straight to Wii U Menu without blackscreen then you're done]
You can overwrite it with Haxchi or uninstall it.

CBHC CFW already blocks DS VC removal and format. [It warns you only once tho, doesn't always work with format tool oddly enough]
If you're scared about accidentally bricking, backup your Wii U's NAND using NAND Dumper.
Even if you screw something up, you can redump NAND back and make your Wii U live again.

Yes, if you set Haxchi config to include 'default=sysmenu' then you will be able to play fake signed games.

The guide explains that there are several ways to setup a sigpatched sysNAND. I just use CBHC because I'm lazy enough that I don't want to click HaxChi before playing my games. But you can certainly uninstall CBHC and just use HaxChi if you're a bit worried. Nobody will blame you.

Also, I updated the guide recently to include a nanbackup section. I'd follow that if you haven't already done so.

This was in no way intended to disrespect your guide Kafluke mate i wouldn't be having the fun i am now with this console if it wasn't for your guide. I guess I've just been dragged in by the scare mongering and am a bit worried about bricking.

I can make a backup of NAND but it doesn't mean my soldering skills would be up to the task of restoring that backup at any point [emoji23]

No offense taken. I kinda wanted to scare people just a bit so they read carefully and take it seriously. Carelessness is the biggest reason people have bricked.

Even if you can't solder, do that backup anyway. You never know, they may have a way to flash with software in the future. If you don't have the backup you're screwed either way

I'll make sure i do a backup. I had a few friends ask me to do this mod for them on Wii U but I'm not willing to do it for people until it's safe enough for me to be confident they wouldn't brick by accident.

Every single console mod is capable of brick. Every last one... if you do something you're not suppose to.

I used kaflukes guide on another site before it made it to gbatemp and went straight in with cbhc.

Never plan to update it and the icon is on the last page.

Made a nand backup just last night just incase but honestly once its up and running as long as you're not an idiot and don't fiddle with things in settings (parental lock as a last measure stopper) it should be fine

If you was really worried or haves kids that delete stuff etc... you could always get mocha and edit the text file in the install folder for haxchi to have haxchi auto boot mocha(or any other cfw or app) when clicked then set "a" or another button to hold while loading haxchi to go to the homebrew menu. That's how I have been setting up all of my Wii U's for people who can't be trusted to make smart choices. Basically put a child lock on the homebrew menu and they can only boot into cfw. So basically you load up into Wii U menu. Click haxchi and it auto boots into mocha/cfw. Voila your able to run things in cfw. Closest way I figured out without actually physically installing Cbhc

What benefits are there to having haxchi boot into Mocha cfw as opposed to Haxchi's own built in cfw? I ask because the latter is plenty to handle signature patching and having it boot a different cfw seems silly unless there are benefits to be gained.

Personally I only knew of mocha at the time and already had it. I didn't know haxchi had a cfw lol I stayed with mocha. I could be wrong but I do know mocha allows more access and stuff but I know the haxchi cfw could potentially do the same. I believe there is a thread somewhere around here talking about it. I will check.

Edit: "Yes Haxchi and CBHC both have a "mini cfw" (which allows eShop/DLC/Unsigned apps to run ) Mocha is another cfw a little more focused to developers so at the moment it's better the mini cfw haxchi has because it's faster to load.
Neither mocha or haxchi uses a fw.img"
This was from January 2017. So idk how accurate it is now because things change fast.

Stay away from Mocha's redNAND option, plain Mocha CFW is fine. [I used it for 1 month until i started using Haxchi CFW]

Ah yes that seems to make sense. RedNAND seems scary! It's a shame we don't have a full brick solution like BootMii or Priiloader for protection. I'm sure these things could come eventually...

We can hope that a pesky Nintendo employee will leak Nintendo Official Tools [Including boot0+boot1 key]

Pretty much. You have a menu option that pops up. Then if you know what your doing select your options etc if not just leave it by default and select the option for it not to appear anymore. But you can also set haxchi to boot its own cfw by default and set homebrew to a. I have mocha by default. Homebrew set to a and wup installer set to R
