So is this what we are coming to realise:

A) The backup loaders are causing potentially unhealthy reading of backup discs due to the slower read speeds?

B) The retail copies of the same games are not making unhealthy sounding noise when playing?

C) Modchips also do not make unhealthy noise with the backups or retails copies.

Or can someone confirm that COD5 and QOS retail versions make the same noise?

Yep my Wii sounds horrible when playing CoD5 so i stopped playing it..it keeps giving me read errors online and ocasionally offline but im to worried the lens gets messed up

yea correct.. (some chips can be changed to 3x or 6x) why when its done automatically anyway lol)

i uninstalled dvdx with anytitle deleter when i had the sound problems using a dvd movie i decided playing a dvd on my wii wasnt worth the way dvdx messed up my backup loader. Aside from that My wii makes some serious spinning and loading noises but no more than my friends chipped wii does and he has used it since launch (since the wiikey was dropped) I think the sound is pretty well normal and as dej said "to be expected"...to the one dude who asked...Yes OF COURSE someone is working on the 3x read speed issue...

(sometimes took 2 or 3 tries for o.3b to read my disk then after uninstalling dvdX everything worked perfect it picks up and reads first try everytime I decided to stray from dvdx for a while myself)

Maybe he has his Wiikey set at 3x reading speed?

My Wii is the same way.

i really don´t think brawls opening-video stops randomly for you (original game / no backup )

edit: for me i will buy the heavy loading games and just play small loading games like brain acedemy , dokapon kingdom or zelda tp via backup-loader

.....

or just get a freakin chip

if your wanting to keep your drive pretty well intact, id say get a chip, no hassle at all, no pissing around with games that don't work, burnt games that read bad, etc etc. that's just my view on it, also backup loaders can only be 3x speed, its impossible to make it 6x speed without doing some dangerous hacking to the drive. and you really do need 6x for some games...otherwise you will notice it badly.

From what I read Nintendo originally intended the Wii to read DVDs. They didn't want the licensing fees but they stupidly forgot to remove the code that lets the Wii read DVDs.

So it was originally planned but never executed due to Nintendo being cheap, so you're not harming the Wii.

You 'aren't going to kill the Wii's lens any time soon. Unless of course you're using DVD +. Good job killing your Wii lens if you're using that.

very true...just people aren't liking the iffy sound

Wii's sound the same using the copyloader as they do with a modchipped wii.

Some games may make a little more noise as the head seeks (due to the 3x) but nothing major.

Reflectivity of DVDR is always going to be lower that of an original disc, so the drive may be a tiny bit louder with copies than with originals.

Also depends on which revision drive you have - D2C+ all seem much quieter (and smoother reading) than the older drives.

My Wii's getting the drive replaced at the moment. It was chipped, and after a year or so started having the odd read error.
After a while, I cleared up for a couple of weeks, but then returned, this time making noise etc.
I changed postition of the Wii, cleaned it etc. Everytime I did ANYTHING, I fixed it for a while, but then the read errors and noise would return.

imho, they die cause we use them too much. Mine was on all the time, but hey it's the price you pay for booting the $h!t outta them. I don't think the Wii drives are meant to last for years and years of heavy usage.

Has anyone noticed a difference between DVD-R and DVD+R with booktype set as DVD-ROM?
DVD+R seem to take a second or two longer to be recognised, and slightly (almost imperceptibly so) slower when loading on occasion. Nothing major.

such thinking shouldn´t exist... sorry but if i buy smtg for 250 i expect it to last at least 2 better 3 years..especially if it´s a endconsumer product... especially if it´s ninty product... sorry but the wii is really cheap build

at least replacement is for free( or not? )

The retail versions of Fifa and CoD are very loud on my Wii, exact same as my backups. Fifa is so load that I have to turn the volume up a lot more to drown out the thrashing. Certainly doesn't sound healthy but it's the norm I'm afraid.

thanks for the answer, so its confirmed, this is normal and has naught to do with the backup loaders.

sigh my wii i believe is an older one, bought it used off someone. Is there anyway of knowing if your drive is newer or not? ahh guess i shoudnt worry about it too much seeing as how this is normal. Does anybody know if Nintendo does indeed replace it for free? after deleting any trace of modification to the system of course?

Go to the calender, and keep scrolling all the way to the left until the messages stop. The sign of the first message = date of Wii's activation / power on. That should help on telling how old the Wii is.

Yep. You can look through the calendar, or with the serial number... as long as the person who previously owned it didn't replace the drive.

Nintendo will replace for free if it's under warranty.

hmm thanks, looks like mine is from feb 07....least it wasnt from launch, whoa i scrolled through the messages and the person who owned it before me didnt play much at all! maybe like 5 messages of playtime and i bought it off just this summer

I had the same problem with the noise. Then when I tried some new homebrew it stop reading games. Wii, Backups, and Gamecube. I called Nintendo and with it under warrenty. They paid for shipping and got it back to me in one week. That's shipping it to them, fixing, and sending it back. Cali to Texas. Great Customer service.
