I had the same problem with the noise. Then when I tried some new homebrew it stop reading games. Wii, Backups, and Gamecube. I called Nintendo and with it under warrenty. They paid for shipping and got it back to me in one week. That's shipping it to them, fixing, and sending it back. Cali to Texas. Great Customer service.

After trying some originals I would say they arent any noiser than they normaly are. Its the backups which are particulary noisey.

no, I havent tried COD or FIFA as I dont have originals for them. I am getting FIFA and COD originals in the week so I can have a completety comparative view of things.

hmm, my originals sound the same as my backups except for QoS, which i don't have an original for yet, when i get one i will be able to compare correctly too. Until then i think i'll just stall on playing QoS since the game is so jumpy and sounds bad that its not worth screwing my wii over just to play

My Wii's getting the drive replaced at the moment. It was chipped, and after a year or so started having the odd read error.
After a while, I cleared up for a couple of weeks, but then returned, this time making noise etc.
I changed postition of the Wii, cleaned it etc. Everytime I did ANYTHING, I fixed it for a while, but then the read errors and noise would return.

imho, they die cause we use them too much. Mine was on all the time, but hey it's the price you pay for booting the $h!t outta them. I don't think the Wii drives are meant to last for years and years of heavy usage.

yeah, I agree. Just like with pc dvd drives (or pretty much any drive) if you use them to often under heavy loads they'll get damage eventually.

Which a mod would merge these noise threads, but until one does ill just post this in both

Just my personal test results... On my wii the load noise is directly related to the burn. I haven't had the issue with any originals (see side note lower). Spent the last two hours re-burning games that caused noises.... For my system as near as i can tell the reading noise issues on backups are caused by inferior burns. All the disc's i reburnt are now as quiet as the originals... This includes my copy of QOS and TOS both of which were extremely noisy before. So my advice is make sure you dont have anything running when you burn, as it seems that even though the burners can recover from underruns and pick up where they left off, for me this is what resulted in loud noises. Hope this helps someone.

Side note about originals... if i play an original after a backup but prior to power cycling the wii, it does seem to read louder than usual.... my theory is when that happens we are still using the dvd read commands which were never meant to be used on actual wii discs, and the extra caching needed at 3x is causing alot more reads than usual, hence the added noise.

Common sense really. People like to believe that if a burn reaches 100% in imgburn/nero/whatever then it is a "good burn" - and this clearly isn't the case. A good burn is a high quality recording that can be read at a sustained rate on the target playback device.

Good to see you've realised there is more to it than that and managed to get some proper good burns.

I'm bad about that.. I'll be surfing and have 10 different programs open while burning a disc. But.. my screensaver does not come on.

you sound like youre probably right, im gonna burn a new copy of QoS tonight and test your theory, i guess since all my other burns have been perfect and never given me any noises, i didnt factor in that i could have a bad burn for once. thanks for shedding some light on this issue

I've noticed that the drive does get a little louder with backups, but its not by a significant amount, most of my burns are barely louder than originals. Furthermore, my original copy of red steel was always obnoxiously loud, and when my wii's drive failed and was sent in for repair, the replacement drive was just as noisy with the game. As a result, I'm not that worried about it. I'd try a backup version of red steel, but last I checked none of the loaders were compatable with it.

So far the only game for me that does a loud noise is smash bros when at the very top menu (beginning)...i dont know why but the drive head seems to be moving constantly even though there is nothing happening on the screen (waiting for me to press A)... otherwise all other games I have tried are ok , a little bit noiser but not much.

btw I use verbatim DVD-R and always burn at 4x

Right ok.. Not that anyone cares but I got an original of Fifa 09 today so I could make a direct comparision of the Loud reading.

I used:
An original copy of Fifa 09
A backup copy burned at 4x speed using imgbrn on verbatim DVD-R.

I could hear the laser reading both copies at exactly the same times.
The only difference was that when reading the COPY the movement of the laser was louder.

This draws me to the conclusion that the only difference between the two was the quality of the media.

I will try burning the game on a different brand of disc and also on DVD+R to see if there is any difference.

I definately would say that using backups has made NO difference to the sound I get from the Wii, so far.

Timbo.
