    I can't get soft reset to work for some reason ... any idea what I could be doing wrong? Do you have to press the buttons one after another or all at the same time? (I've tried both)

    Did you turn on the soft reset function in the system options? You press all the buttons at the same time.

    Yes, turn on the Soft Reset function in the System Options.

    You don't have to hit all the buttons at exactly the same time. As long as all of them are held down it will reset. I hold down L + R + Down + B then roll my thumb over to A.

    True but actually eventually all the buttons will be hit at the same time even for a second.
