I just tried melee with my old 8gb class 2 sdhc, it took about a minute to get to the character selection screen but I havent got a single sound issue.

NTSC kirby air ride 1.35gb, booted directly trough nintendont 1.67, on an hdd on the wiiu using a ps3 controller, it works like a charm same for ssbm you guys should check your stuff maybe it got corrupted somehow.
