Wasn't the A button functional before the Mario Kart 8 update. As duffmmann said. And the L + R was for the Joycon's.

ya, as I was saying, even on the latest version of mk8d, the a button works for me on the title screen

Ya you said sometimes it works and then duffmmann explained why. I read the thread unless I'm missing something.

I'm sure the L & R are for syncing and checking joycons are both connected
But I'm sure A or Start also work if I'm not mistaken I know they had worked for me.
