Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

I always approved of Nintendo, they're my favourite company on the video game market. I was with Nintendo since the GBC and my love for them never skipped a beat. I only shit on them when they fumble and drift into the realms of stupidity, but I'll still buy their stuff till the day I die. I'm like a stern parent - I'll scold may little baby N when they're not getting A's on the test, but I'll still hug them and tell them a bedtime story in the evening. :P
I meant "approve of" in the sense of approving of their decisions. We had many an argument over those back in the day.

Never said it was?

We'll see. They could also just do a smaller revision, while the controllers stay the same size.
This is also true. Time will tell. Even as it is now, I'm excited.

i too was expecting a more traditional home console. however i had a fantasy idea that the new pro controller could be connected to your android/ios phone/tablet, and game play could have been streamed but only through the official app and only with the official new pro controller. obviously with data and bandwidth concerns.

the Switch logo keeps reminding me of the neo geo CD logo

If you want a regular console, then get a regular console. Nintendo isn't, and that's kind of the point of Nintendo, to not be a regular console and try something new.
I do buy regular consoles. I also buy Nintendo consoles. You don't have to pick one over the other.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I was hoping for a regular console with a regular controller that had specs comparable to xbone and ps4.

I knew it wouldn't happen, but hopefully they'll at least have a party chat this time.

I get it but c'mon. Nintendo has been making gimmicks since the Wii. The least thing you should wait from Nintendo is an average console.

Very true. Hybrid systems fascinate me, I think they're the future of computers in general. I honestly believe we'll soon live in a world where you take your computing device with you wherever you go and dock it where necessary to get extra juice. That way you have access to your software at all times. It's superior to the Cloud in every way, since it's not dependant on streaming and thus Internet connections. Besides, someone smart once said that "the Cloud is just someone else's computer", and I subscribe to that to a fault. I don't want to follow my computing, I want my computing to follow me, and the NX is the embodiment of that dream. The only thing I don't like is the gimpy detachable controller, but the Pro controller fixes that issue.

Well... we as customers generally don't know WHAT we want until someone comes along and gives it to us...

Sometimes they get it wrong... sometimes they get it VERY right (Apple...)

Sometimes they come along and just do something so completely different that changes the entire gaming landscape...

Game consoles also have nothing on PC in terms of graphics... even a $500 PC is better than a $500 game console... (and it does more than just play games or stream video...)

What PCs don't have though is handheld gaming, and that's where Nintendo has always excelled...

I'm not saying the Switch will be this, but imagine what cell phones would be like if Apple had never released the iPhone...

I like to think of Nintendo as the Apple of game consoles... always eager to Think Different

The detachable controllers are interesting, I think, and with the Pro controller, like you said, it does "solve" the problem of them. Interesting thing about the detachable controllers is it adds the possibility of swapping them out. There could potentially be updated or customized controller wings you snap in. I guess that's not a big deal for a console, but it is certainly something different when it comes to the handheld aspect of it.

Speaking of controls, I'm slightly disappointed that the clickable scroll-wheel shoulder button didn't make an appearance. After seeing it in a patent, I thought it could actually be a pretty useful control innovation (maybe not completely original as they've been on mice for a long time, but it would be new to consoles).

I didn't think of customisation, you have a point. This could potentially be a very friendly device for the left-handed or disabled customers, not to mention all of the "custom" controllers you could build for specific games. Steel Battalion *with an actual screen*? Sign me the f*ck up, I'm starting to build a mech suit right away.

720p is what the rumors said, so we'll go with that.

720p on a handheld is quite good...

I'd assume the base when connected to a TV would easily be able to handle 1080p...

I know people in the gaming community are saying that, but the now old Nvidia Shield tablet that has hardware now about 3 generations behind what should be in the Switch supported a screen with a resolution of 1920x1200. Granted taking the resolution down could increase framerates etc, but Nintendo told IGN withing the last hour or so that the whole consoles power is in the tablet part. So no extra power in the base at all. It charges and provides the connection to the tv. So if it can support 1080P or higher on a tv then it would not make sense to down the resolution on the device itself.

Apple and thinking differently are not words that belong together.
