Nintendo Labo announced

Nintendo has revealed the announcement they were teasing for today, and at 10 PM GMT, the Nintendo Labo was revealed to the public. Focusing on three key tenets of "make, play, and discover", the Nintendo Labo are "Toy-Cons" that consist of cardboard and can be crafted together to create things such as a little piano, house, fishing rod, and more. The Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons are then placed within them, for interactivity. To start, there will be two kits, one that's a variety kit which includes a fishing rod, 2 cars, a house, a motorbike handlebar, and a piano. The second, is a "robotic backpack suit". The products will cost $69.99 or $79.99 respectively.

Both sets will release on April 20, 2018, and Nintendo will be holding hands-on events to demo the Nintendo Labo in New York City from Feb. 2-3, and in San Francisco from Mar. 2-4. If you're interested, you can register for that here. The Labo will require folding the cardboard in order to make it form into the object you want, by following the guidlines provided in the box. Some of the creations will also have minigames that utilize the Joy-Cons, where you use the rumbling from the controller in order to know when to reel in the fishing pole. Also shown was a piano, which plays music when the cardboard keys are pressed.

at 1:38 , the only thing I see missing from the robot part is that in close future there will be an Switch HD strapped in face, this is the only piece remaining for truly immersive experience

plastic is more durable than cardboard.
wonder how many times you can "play" before it breaks apart.

Love it or hate it, this is an absolutely brilliant move by Nintendo.

And you have to agree that this is leaps and bounds better than fidget spinners.
At least kids will be using their brains and not mindlessly wasting precious grey matter.

After watching the trailer closer, I definitely noticed some things that aren't mentioned in the variety or robot bundles.
A bird, car (steering wheel/accelerator pedal), airplane control stick, camera, gun(?), some sort of arm, and a drum(?) kick pedal.
Maybe they're other projects you can make with the already included components or future sets?

The majority of the price comes from the software. Really you're paying $60 for the game and $10 for the cardboard
^ this
and if it fails, it will probably be because of all the people compulsively saying "$70 for cardboard", but yeah when the usual game is $60 its simple math.
I'm not getting one unless my daughter makes me, but in that case I might just say cmon $70 for cardboard?

70$ cardboard.

Sit back and think about this. Nintendo is experimenting. That's a good thing. They're also hiking up the costs of fucking CARDBOARD. That's bad.

Actually it's a genius idea, in the vein of Nintendo, they always been the one compagny that push "enjoyment and games" before anything else, where you get technologic showroom on others,
you get games that kids can actually play and learn something of it.
I would've kill to have this as a kid, but the price... GOSH, at 40€ or 50 top for the mecha it would've been perfect... (because yeah, there is still the software that comes with so 50 top would've been nice)

But as always, Nintendo prove that they are still the only one that focus on entertainement and inovation as their main goal.
People that complain about this being stupid, you grown up too fast.

I ain't gonna lie though

It does look fun as fuck. I just think the 70$/80$ price tag is a bit too steep for what's ultimately a gimmick when the most of the fun will come from building it and seeing it work. I don't see much replay value in this that'd justify the price tag of a full fledged game.

Many of the target audience for this product, of which you might not be.

I really feel like a lot of the responses on here aren't realizing this isn't even for them. Even their statement before this was revealed was that "it's for kids and those who still feel like a kid inside." If that doesn't apply to you or your interests, then why hate on this? How does it affect you?

exactly, i don't see why this is an inherently bad idea, sure it's HELLA overpriced but keep in mind that this isn't meant for us Gamers™, it's mostly for little kids and that's fine

it's like getting mad at any chintzy VTech toys

While this is a great idea, I think I’ll stick to making a boat from a laundry basket for my kids. Perhaps a car out of a cardboard box. Once we made a helmet for the kids “spaceship” (different laundry basket) out of a milk carton. Never stop imagining.

I think it's fair to call it overpriced given that it's literally a gimmick with little replay value. Putting it together and seeing it in action will be fun for a bit but what reason will there be to come back to it consistently?

Compare this to the 10$ cheaper Monster Hunter World, the free Phantasy Star Online 2 Cloud, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Skyrim, and so on, and you have games with way more replay value for either less, or equal price.

It's like giving Wii Sports a free pass because it demonstrates the WiiMote gimmick well. It's got neat ideas, don't get me wrong whatsoever. I think it looks fun as shit, just not for very long. The price tag should reflect this with maybe 20-35$ at the most.
