If you have a wireless router that isn't set to WPA or WPA2 then you can use it without WiFi USB Connector. If you have WPA or WPA2 and don't want to change it, or only a wired connection, then yes, you do need one.
You need a wireless internet connection. You don't have to have to have a nintendo wifi USB connector.
AFAIK, there is no way to connect to wifi other than public hotspots, the USB connector (which is no longer produced), or the use of a wireless router.
