As many people here saw, there was a headset for the 3DS announced around a month ago.

The headset features a removable microphone, and a music control button. It has been available online for a while (Except it says the released date is tomorrow in Europe), and no reviews have came up.

The one question I had (And most comments on the few sites I go on) was... how does it work? The 3DS only has a headphone jack output; not special input like the DS/DSi.

Well, I can assure you it does work, and here's a short review.
    _

I stumbled into Best Buy today to try out the demo for Super Mario 3D Land, and came across the headset. I was tempted to buy it on Amazon, but figured I didn't want to waste $30 if the headset didn't even work.

I then looked up for a review on my phone before buying it... couldn't find anything. I thought... well I'll take one for the team. If it's shitty... sucks for me, at least it will prevent more people from wasting money.

Anyway, my opinion on it: I like it.

It's comfortable (For a $30 headset. These aren't Beats by Dre). The microphone works, and the music control thing is pretty handy. The head size adjustment makes it able to fit anyone's head. Very sturdy, and clicks nice when changing the size. The volume and quality are pretty good too.

My only complaint is that at first I couldn't get the microphone to work, because you have to snap it in a certain way for these notches to match up. Once you see how to do it, it's no problem.

The music control is actually really nice. It's located on the wire, closer to the top, and consists of one small button. It's fairly simple.
    - One click: Pauses/Plays the song.
    - Two clicks: Skips the current track.
    - Three clicks: Goes to the previous track.
It is very convenient because I dislike opening the 3DS just to change the song, so this way it could remain in your pocket.

To sum it up, there's no problems with the headset at all. Just as expected pretty much. The real question is whether you want to dish out $30 for something that is basically optional, because of the built in microphone and speakers. Also, as of right now no games support it, so I would suggest to wait until a game like Heroes of Ruin comes to the shelves.

Short, vague review but I'll answer any questions people have.

As for the inputs, the one that plugs into the 3DS itself has three rings (That's how the stereo sound and microphone both work), and the detachable microphone has two.

Ok, so I have a question... since it does not appear to have a proprietary head like the DS one did, have you tried it on a any other devices? Since there is only one jack will it work with a PC and still be a mic? Just sorta curious might be a decent option for other applications.

God I hope/wish Nintendo would fix the gimped sound output which plagues apparently SOME 3DS systems and not others (yet in DS mode the volume is fine.) But MY 3DS in 3DS mode has extremely low volume in video and mp3 playing.

Yes my headphones work fine, I am convinced there are differing 3DS models, some with decent volume and some with gimped.

With my PC, I have Logitech speakers with a little control box. On the box it has a headphone jack which I normally plug headphones in and I use a microphone that goes in a jack on the back of my computer. It does not work because the computer only detects it as headphones. Non-usb headsets normally have two wires (One for the mic, one for the headphones), but it doesn't work because it's all in one.

I didn't try it, but I'm almost positive it would work on a smart phone because it's exactly how smartphone headsets work. There's just one spot it plugs in.

    It was a joke... Jeez.

Obviously they are quality headphones if some pairs are $400 and people are buying them. I realize that they aren't even close to being the best.

it does not matter how many people buy a 400$ pair of headphones, its the brand, thats why it costs so much, not the quality

Has anyone tested if it would work for the WiiU?

I think what he is referring to is the fact that Beats by Dre is probably the most overpriced, overly colored headphone brands you can possibly buy.

The general consensus from anybody with any semblance of discriminating taste for music and sound quality is that Beats by Dre is a brand reserved solely for people who don't really know or care about audio fidelity but are willing to throw away their money to try to buy their way into the "cool" crowd by buying an over-hyped pair of headphones.

To put it bluntly, you can very easily purchase a pair of far superior sound quality headphones from pretty much any other manufacturer (with the possible exception of Skull Candy) for significantly less than what you would be paying for your Beats by Dre headphones.

With that out of the way, I can try to clarify the confusion concerning the 3.5 mm jack for the 3DS.

Regular headphones with no microphones normally have a 3.5 mm plug with 3 contact points. These contacts are for ground, left channel and right channel.

Headsets (headphones with an included microphone) designed for use with PCs have an additional 3.5 mm plug dedicated for the microphone that are designed to plug into a microphone jack. Thus, they have a pair of 3.5 mm plugs rather than 1.

That said there are also headsets that have a single 3.5 mm plug with 4 contact points. These contacts are for ground, left channel, right channel and microphone. Many modern potable devices like smart phones, tablets, and the 3DS are designed to accept this kind of 3.5 mm plug.

In addition, headsets designed for such devices often have buttons along the wire which allow you to control the device from the headset itself. This is done by shorting out combinations of wires leading to the contact points which the devices are designed to detect and execute commands for. This is how pause/play, track skipping and volume controls on headsets work.

The Nintendo 3DS Power Headset is an example if such a device, but it is by no means the only headset that does this. A quick search for Smart Phone headsets will turn up a wide variety of similar devices, some of which are much cheaper and some of which will provide much better sound quality than the Nintendo Power Headset can offer.

That said, there are adapters that you can buy which allow you to use PC headsets with two 3.5 mm plus for the 3DS and other similar devices.

Here is a relatively cheap one :

Alternatively, you could use such an adapter to plug in regular headphones and a separate clip-on or standing microphone into your portable device's single 3.5 mm headset jack.

There are also adapters that go the opposite way as well. In case you want to use the Nintendo 3DS Power Headset on you PC for example.

Here is such an adapter :

The WiiU uses the standard 3.5 mm with 4 contact point plug so it should work fine. I would personally advice you to search for other Smart Phone Headsets instead though as the Nintendo 3DS Power Headset is not exactly a good value.

Better yet, get a decent pair of PC Headsets instead and purchase an adapter like the one below :
