ahhh, so ur friends are the ones deciding to get an external dvd drive over a usb hdd... make sure u explain to the pros and cons of each choice... and also, because its an external dvd drive, u still wont be able to play gamecube games or ios reloading games like u can with cioscorp (if ur wii isn't a new D3-2 model)

in my opinion, there's no good reason to get an external dvd drive over an usb hdd... the only MAYBE acceptable reasons are that your friends are too poor to buy an external hard drive (even though as spindle of dvd's costs almost as much as a USB HDD) or they already have a lot of backup disks and ur friends are either too lazy or too dumb to transfer them to a usb hdd

An external dvd for playing original games could be usefull. Mainly for renting games. Lets say you rent a game (or barrow a friends game) but your wii disc drive broke. With an external dvd drive, it's a non-issue. Just plug in your ext dvd, pop in the game and bingo, instant play. This would take what a program and a cios?

@Chartube12
I don't think it reads original discs

Just burned ones. Anyone here to clarify?

Why would this drive do upscaling when the wii wont officially act as a dvd player?

Are you telling me that Nintendo's new anti piracy measures are gonna be hidden behind pretending to be a dvd player?

Yes. Why else would they be adding a HDMI port? and now a new drive? Nintendo did claim it would take more than an update for dvd. Also they wants said dvd playing and different colors would be available after the Wii shortage ended. There is a black wii so...get where I'm coming from?

Their is nothing on google, and your listening to some tool who comes and chats shit at a store, this sounds retarded. The reason they took the dvd playing controls out is so they didnt have to pay the license. They wouldnt stick them back in and give you a HDMI port so you can have a DVD player when you can buy one a lot cheaper or use every other console.

Nintendo has said repeatedly that their next console won't simply be a Wii with HD abilities. They won't make a new console until they feel that their new ideas won't work without new hardware.

Who said anything about a HD console? No one. The Wii with HDMI would simply use it for movies. old Games woud need to be patched and what not for hd. Games are limited to 480p on the Wii. Simular to ds games are stuck at there resolution on the ds xl/ll

Nintendo in there own magazine said the wii with dvd playing would eventually be released. Amit that was 3 odd years ago.

This is as bad as hell !!!!!!!
Why don't they stop wasting their time dealing with this and figure out how bull-shit their graphic in comparison to other consoles in this generation !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can tell when someone just joins the site. They alway say the dumbest things. So Nintendo should stop trying to find a way for us. To stop jacking their stuff! Instead focus on new hardware that we will exploit as well. Come on now!

What use is HDMI if you're not going to use it for HD? Besides, the Wii isn't capable of outputting HD for movies, either.

And we all know that a DVD-playing Wii isnt' going to happen. After all, newer consoles don't have the ability to play them at all.

Yeah thats right only seems to play backups just found about 10 random old burners
and cd/dvd combo drives and they all read wii backups perfectly and the videos on
mario galaxy, wario land, mario kart and others dont have that jittery video or skipping
so i guess thats what you have to do to get 6x speed on a softmod or whatever speed
it may be running the usb dvd-rom at..... Well that was fun and thanks for the info

Using USB 1.1 is like replacing the DVD drive with a floppydisk drive
wtf.gif
On a computer you're right but the Wii doesn't need high USb speeds, the original IOS just use 1.1 speed so they could also use just 1.1 hardware. So that's nothing like replacing DVD with floppy.

Amit that was 3 odd years ago.You are always saying that the Wii gets HDMI, can you please give a source for this? Without source you are just talking bullshit. I see a point in HDMI even for SD as many cheap LCD TVs don't have component input anymore and os you could get 480p only with HDMI but I never heard that the Wii will get HDMI. The newer Wii drives (the ones who don't read backups) don't even have a DVD-Video mode (which was used for backups), so how can the Wii become a DVD-player? See FenirWolf's post:QUOTE(FenrirWolf @ Mar 17 2010, 03:03 AM)

Vindication!!!!
