Yes. Why else would they be adding a HDMI port? and now a new drive? Nintendo did claim it would take more than an update for dvd. Also they wants said dvd playing and different colors would be available after the Wii shortage ended. There is a black wii so...get where I'm coming from?

Yes, of course! HDMI = piracy control! The genius of it... no one would expect that (hem, probably because it would be a stupid idea and doesn't make any sense).

I hope this is not gonna happen by the DSi

Rumour has it that Nintendo are working on a more powerful successor to the Wii which has HD support and will likely have a Blu-Ray drive. It will be interesting to see how long it is before this gets hacked too!

LOL, Nintendo using SONY-developed hardware? THAT would be the day...

Blu-Ray is the new disc media standard, and is (like DVD) backed by more then just Sony. Most of the major Japanese electronics companies that deal with disc media backed Blu-Ray, and it shows.

The next generation of consoles to come out with have Blu-Ray support if they have physical disc drives.
I predict the 360 is the MOST LIKELY to drop disc drives.

Nintendo must be feeling the pinch of the recession to take such drastic measures! If you ask me, it's too little too late!

I agree with some of the other comments posted. If the majority of wii games were not so crappy and overpriced then perhaps more people would buy them. Needless to say Nintendo are like Microsoft and just plain greedy. It probably wont be long before Nintendo take the same tact as Microsoft did by banning modded units from their online service. This in turn made people go out and buy more units didn't it? Newer units that can't be modded in fact. Is this new drive a prelude to that behaviour? Most probably.

It probably wont stop piracy but it will make the manufacturers a sh*t load more cash! The b*stards!

Honestly, I have no use for Wii online like I did my old 360. There arent many games that have full online multiplayer, so what would be the point in that?

this whole thread has turned to shit!

it's about a new dvd reader, nothing else.

one way to stop old drives working would simply be to remove one of the voltages from the connector.

the old drives used 3.3v , 5v, and 12v

you could drop the 3.3v and put a regulator on the drive,
or drop the 12v and use 5v motors.

someone needs to get one of these consoles & draw up what's on the drive power connector.
