Gaming New Super Mario Brothers - letterboxing on a widescreen TV

Hi gang,
Can anyone tell me if this is the same way the game works for them? In the menu pages for New Super Mario Bros, my widescreen TV is filled. But on the map and during gameplay, there is substantial letterboxing on the top and bottom. I read that the game is in widescreen, but I'm surprised to see horizontal bars. Am I the only one seeing this, or is that how it's supposed to be?

i guess your wii is set to 4:3

Wow....I feel really stupid right now. I own a 4x3 TV, but this is hooked up to a friend's 16x9. Since all of the other menus were filling the screen, I'd just assumed that the console was running on an auto-detect feature. Thanks for the help; a quick setting change fixed it right up!
