Make the image with Paint, then use iaza (check on google) to add transparency on a specific color.
I recommend using the brightest pink as the transparent color (Green works well too.)

well that just depends on your sources.

I'm sorry, I thought this was a message board where internet piracy was fairly rampant...

Try $699 ($199 upgrade from a previous version) for Photoshop CS4 and $999 (!!!, $349 upgrade) for Photoshop CS4 Extended.

It is, that's why I didn't get the joke.
gridattack asked for a free image editor that supports transparency. Key word being 'free'.
I responded with Photoshop. Photoshop is FAR from free.
However, it is "free" if you know where to get it (which isn't hard).

I had figured by now, but thanks anyway.

I downloaded gimp, but does anybody knows how to add transparency to an image?

Go to Image>Transparency>Add Alpha channel. Now Highlighting and deleting will cause transparency. So will the eraser.

Personally, I prefer Paint.NET

an easier way to do transparency is just lowering the opacity in the layer window
If the whole layer itself is opaque it won't really work... you'll just get a 'ghost' looking image.
Also, if you're trying to put an element over another, it defeats the purpose -- take a look at the New Super Mario Bros. Deluxe logo in my sig... if I had just 'lowered the opacity' of the Deluxe text it would look pretty bad.
