A handful of interesting videos have appeared on a YouTube channel, thanks to a user by the name of kunkun kun, who has uploaded footage from Nintendo's SpaceWorld 1996 event. Shown within the video are pre-release demos of noteworthy Nintendo 64 titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and perhaps most shockingly, the canceled Mother 3, or how it would have been known as in the west: Earthbound 64. At 10:30 into the video, we can see an incredibly early version of Mother 3 being displayed. The game would later return to further SpaceWorld events, even being playable for the public in 1999, where it was claimed to be "60% complete", though development would come to a halt during Nintendo's shift towards the GameCube, and Mother 3 would eventually find its footing as the game we know today, which released exclusively in Japan for the Game Boy Advance.

So they removed driving for the GBA game, no wonder since the game was almost at the size limit on how big a GBA gane could be. That's part of the reason why Mother 3 is so linear.

Earthbound sold like shit outside Japan actually, in no small part due to a shitty marketing campaign. Also there's tons of...weird pg-13 stuff in mother 3 that Nintendo wouldn't have allowed at any cost in that era

They still had driving in GBA Mother 3, you get to manually drive the Pork Bean around the new highways

Ah yes I had forgotten about that. But you do not get as many driving as you can get in the Snes and Nes games. Although I think the more driving you get with the bicycle in the Snes game. The tank is still fun.

I've been trying to forget Earthbound 64. Thinking about what it could've been makes me sad. Mother 3 GBA was great, but presumably some of the chronological jumps wouldn't've happened in EB64.

With the small amount of space they were working with, and all the technical difficulties, I personally believe it would have happened on the N64 version as well. Could also be a choice by design versus anything else.
