Then what would be the point of the USB port? To recharge it?

It seems like it use USB port as power source while it updates to newer firmware. hmm.. interesting.

*Firmware update:

sky3DS+ will come with the newest firmwareV4(FIRMWARE_VERSION=4 in the settings.txt, you don't need to do any update at the moment), we will keep it updated on our site if needed.

1.Download the updated firmware.bin from sky3DS.com, and copy it into the root directory of your microSD card.

2.Insert your microSD card into sky3DS+, connect your PC and sky3DS+ with a USB cable(come with, which can also work as a USB Adapter once connection built).

3.The LED red light will turn on for 10 seconds, then turn to the green light and keep flashing for 10 seconds, once the light turn off it means the sky3DS+ has been updated successfully.
Alert: Never unplug the USB cable while the green light keep flashing, it might damage your sky3DS+ card!

4.Delete the firmware.bin file in your microSD card

but there is no new firmware yet (obviously) so nobody knows if there will be.
If they have any sense they will fix FAT32 issue first..
 
If there's no rom that actually goes over 4gig then fat32 is fine, isn't it?

Xenoblade as one of the largest games is exactly 4096mb in untrimmed state which is exactly 4gb, thus should exactly fill out the fat32 filesize limit. Again this is only my theory, I don't own a flashcard yet and don't know how they handle these game sizes on fat32.

The usb port in my opinion is an external power source to "boot" the card without it being inserted into 3ds. As I take it it kinda "starts" and if there is a firmware file present it updates itself. This solution makes sense as they can not have something like a home brew firmware updater application as cia or whatever on the 3ds itself.

I have no idea if sky3ds reads exfat.

From my understanding 3ds Games can be maximum 8gb whereas there is, by now, no game that actually is this big. So trimming a bit off the 4gig roms should be sufficient for fat32.
 
I can personally say that Xenoblade is too big. It won't fit on fat32 since it is bigger than 4gb. I'm sure such a simple problem as file size can be worked out in the future! :P
 
Just to understand the matter,
Are big roms possible as cia or on gateway? Like can I split roms there? I mean cia should work as you can also buy these games in eshop, right, but what about gateway?
 
Anyone know if sky3ds works with trimmed roms or does that count as modified roms and sky3ds can't read them because of it? If so then i was thinking you could trim all your games so they would be less then 4gb.
 
The old sky3ds cards supported trimmed roms, however it worked in another way (diskwriter) but generally I don't see why it wouldn't work with the new sky3ds plus. But only time and thus someone actually having the card will tell.

No, it's not. I don't know where you're getting that information from. Xenoblade is exactly 4GB without trimming. Its trimmed size is 3.71GB, but even then it should work with FAT32 since it's exactly 4GB.

The blue button Sky3DS works with trimmed ROMs just fine. I dunno about the concrete case of Xenoblade, though.

The thing about FAT32 is it doesn't support 4GB and up. 4GB is the max size but the dump could be slightly larger.

The word personally means that I, yes I, personally tested it. Meaning I took it and dropped it in the formatted FAT32 SD card and saw that it was rejected due to the 4GB restriction.

Figured trimming Pokemon X/Y messed up the game because it is a card 2 type game.

That's because you can't trim card2 games that saves within the rom.
 
Split the rom? Open it up in a hex editor, split it at the half way offset, 1 file is xenoblade1.3ds and the other file is xenoblade2.3ds, then put those files onto the SD card and then reopen them in a hex editor and paste xenoblade2.3ds into the end of xenoblade1.3ds and that should work, no?
