But what exactly is this softmodding? Does it still run the PS2 like normal so no one would ever know you're running hacks?
If you used good disks then yes but for me I'm using bad ones and it works 99%

QUOTE(Joe88 @ Jul 17 2008, 11:35 PM) I would just got for a regular PS2 mainly just because all the stuff you can do with it, to the free COGSWAP (works just like SWAP MAGIC), HD Loader, Independence Exploit (PS1 save exploit, think of it as the twilight hack for wii)
Don't use CogSwap! Use ESR(its free too)! With ESR you don't do a thing to your PS2, and all the swapping gets a pain after a bit of doinng it.

im not gonna re rip 40 dvd's just to patch games to save a step
not worth it

All you do is run the program hit "patch" and a takes 2 sec! Only 1 to 5 sec! But for you reburning 40 games isn't that fun to do. Now for you new PS2 softmods don't do what he did! Use ESR and NOT CogSwap!

Thats the best thing about ps3's. They are the cheepeset Blueray players. So eventually when my parents decide to get one, We will most likley go with ps3 and I wont have to pay a dime

haha nice!

yeah and since the ps3 firmware gets upgraded all the time you will be getting FW updates that make your PS3 as good as the most expensive blu-ray players. wicked good deal.

If I bought one of the old 80GB models at a store that still had it (the kind that play PS2), would it still work just as well as the new ones for the Blu-Ray profiles?

Is there anything the new one has that the old one doesn't? And I take it you can't use Swap Magic or other softmods to play backed up PS2 games? Are there any good modchips for PS3?

The old ones are just as good since it's all the same firmware.

I know there actually is a way to play PS2 back ups but you have to open the system up

You'd be better off buying a cheap used ps2 for like 30$ off craigslist and hacking it for PS2 backups. So you don't void your warranty on the PS3.

Hmm, so you don't need a modchip but you need a third-party switch?

And this is ONLY to use a Swap Magic, not to just run burned games?

Seems like a big thing to me... I was thinking there could be a software exploit like the one that lets you make decrypted Blu-Ray (movie) ISOs using a PS3, or the Twilight Hack stuff for the Wii.

The only reason I'm considering getting an older PS3 is because the space where we will be putting it is very limited, and I wouldn't have room for both a PS3 and a PS2. It's one or the other, really.

Here ya go

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00...heapassgam08-20

that's the one that has software emulated backwards compatiblity and also free shipping

I believe the 40Gb ps3s are able to play ps2 games right now, however I think the 80Gb ones on the shelves now cannot. The new 80Gb model set at 399.99 this Sept. will not be able to play ps2 games. The older versions of both the 80Gb will be able to play in some regions. So basically if you want to play ps2 games I think you should get one now. Although you can just get a ps2 on ebay for like 50 bucks. (shipping not included)

PS3 as a Blu-ray player is quite promising, firmware update is easy (you just need press X a few times if your PS3 is connected to internet) and PS3 firmware update includes its Blu-ray drive profile update as well.

I don't think general public walks into an electronic store and says "I want a Blu-ray player with latest profile, and support future profiles via firmware update."
