The point of doing this is because some resellers are getting busted by the authorities for having devices that circumvent copyright/dmca/etc. By selling a device that has no firmware on it by default, you as a reseller are absolved of the illegal aspect which is the firmware. The hardware itself is perfectly legal to sell. The firmware you can simply download from the vendor's website. Again assuming you make this firmware available in a country/region where such things are legal, this isn't a legal problem for the vendor as well.

At least the CycloDS instructions are written in English, and their support is pretty decent. Have you tried reading some of the pigeon English that is rampant in most other carts from China? Good luck trying to figure out what you're supposed to do for those!

How many flashcarts work right out of the box? How many flashcarts come with a microSD with the firmware already on it?

I fully agree, but unfortunately, how many people new to flash carts know that? I my opinion the Cyclo is one of the best flash carts, not just overall, but especially for new users. Changing the firmware on a M3, R4, DSTT, iTouch isn't a big deal, yet there are people who are going to think it's a file minefield, it's a lot easier on a Cyclo.

I've ordered and set up flash cards for quite a few people. I've always given them a choice, I recommend the Cyclo, they choose a iTouch or M3 Real because it's cheaper, fair enough. I set up the cards and typed up detailed instructions on how to load file, where to place ROMs, what problems they may encounter, how to update firmware and so on. I still get people coming back asking me to look at the card because a game won't work, or if they've actually bothered to read the instructions, asking me to show them how to update the firmware. Not that most of them really understand how to do it after I've shown them.

In the end it's no big difference, it's still going to be easy to install the firmware out of the box, but some people are still going to have problems what ever happens, those that read will hopefully understand, those that don't will probably Google it and end up here, asking the same question again.

Some people might have got it for a birthday or some sort of present and they may not be lucky enough to have internet access so it could be a problem. I suppose we never see the true value of things that we take for granted until we have to start paying for things ourselves.[/self-righteousness]
