Netflix to adapt Gears of War into a live-action film, and an adult-oriented series

The Netflix twitter account has announced today that the 16 year-old franchise, Gear of War, will be receiving the live-action treatment in the form of a feature-length film, and then an adult-oriented series will follow. Netflix has partnered up with The Coalition to adapt the franchise, and they tease that beyond the film and the series there will be "more stories to follow".

When the first Gears came out I found the whole idea very cool and intriguing... while the setting is really cool, the game lacks a lot in the story compartment. Idk if later installments had a better storyline but I doubt it.

...at least we can be grateful that they can't botcher the story :D

Do they even know that this gow thingie basically have no real plot? Well, didn't stopped halo makers.

They do have a plot, both in game and in the EU, but the question is whether they pay attention to it and not just make one up with maybe a pointless sex scene or two that everyone mocks.

What kind of "adult oriented" are we talking about here, exactly?

Most likely gory stuff I assume.
Netflix didn't give much details in the post, but seeing how the franchise itself is M-rated, one can assume the "adult-oriented" aspect could be due to the gore that said show would have, similar to Castlevania possibly.

IMO video games do lack sex scenes and love in general. I'm not trying to be a jerk, I really believe video games are too much conservative for sex and love, while being 100% fine with violence.

I remember GTA San Andreas getting in trouble because of hot cafe, but GTA V is fine even with a 10 minutes interactive torture scene that was not even hidden (amazing gaming moment btw, but you got my point).

Thanks for being literal. I was being sarcastic.

This is a really odd new dynamic. Gears of War has changed so much between all of its different games and now a movie? What's the movie's selling point going to be? These big budget AAA games often have totally different writers after one or two games and the way video games tell a story is different from movies. The movies being made for these games are often an unrelated story in a costume instead of an actual extension of anything.

I hope it's good and all (a good movie is a great thing to see) but it seriously bums me out that the smart thing is to expect to not watch it until if I hear it's worth watching after it releases.

My post was aimed more in part to the adapation and the reference to the Paramount Halo series which had a sex scene people mocked.

You might be interested in the Gears expanded universe though, although IIRC/without giving spoilers, it’s played more for drama and in some contexts (IMO) symbolic meaning/comparison.

As for GTA SA, IIRC one big issue was the rating system, particularly in NA where there’s M and AO, with AO meaning certain retailers wont sell it.

The live action ones are most likely going to be mid to shit. But the animated one might be worth a damn if they keep up the trend of making actual good video game to animation adaptations

If NF actually follows the source material and doesn't divert too much from it in order to expand and build on the cinematic lore, and if they leave PC / representation / pandering garbage out then I think there may be hope for the series. If the Halo series is any indication how a studio was able to alienate its fanbase and drive a respected videogame franchise into the ground, I just pray NF doesn't follow suit in that regard.

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.
