I know there's talk about Homebrew and flashcarts available for the NDS family. That being said, I want an NES emulator for my DSi, but don't want to have to buy a flashcart for it. Is there a way to sideload it via my SD card, even if it requires hacking the system itself?

Well, you could install an exploitable DSIware game plus its exploit via hardmod, then run a DSi-mode-compatible NES emulator (do any even exist?)

Considering that the flashcard recommended by Jayro is 19 dollars shipped with tracking plus the cost of a microSD (plus it runs almost all retail, dev, and homebrew DS apps) - while a professional hardmod will be 35 to 50 dollars and will "only" give you all DSiwares...
