Homebrew Need Some Tips

So a few years back (I say 2) I made this game called Survival Plus in RPG Maker XP........I almost got to the demo but I hit a pole in the ground and it was dropped........Now I want to bring it back, but instead of it being in RPG Maker I want to do it on the DS. I know I need Palib (that is a development tool for DS hombrews). How well should skills be in C, C++, or what ever langauge I need to learn to code. I want to do something at least semi big before I go into the Air Force (Since I can still do this but I'll have less time than I do now). So you know Survival Plus is like Lost in Blue. You with a bunch of people on an island and you must develop skills, get along with your crew, get along with the primative island dwellers, and ultimately find your way home. If you want to help just let me know......but I need to know how to prepare for this.
