It could be for DOS, I don't really remember.
It's a side-scrolling (horizontal) Space Shooter game. Similar to R-type but it's not. Graphics on-par/better than Super Nintendo.
And the only distinguishing thing I can remember is that you can change the speed of the game.

Is this enough to go on?

That's pretty hard to go off on since there were a lot of side scrolling shmups in the 90s, maybe Gradius 3?

I'm probably wrong, so don't bite my off head over it.

It's definitely side-scrolling, so Tyrian is out. Could you adjust the game speed in Gradius? Again, that's really the only thing I can remember.

Heh, Duke Nukem was awesome but I'm talking about a Spaceship shooter.
Blazing Star/Aero Blasters is not for the PC, and it was released later than 1996.

Anyways, here's the story of why I want to find out this game: I remember playing it/watching others play it when I was a kid at a daycare center. When it was my turn, the older kids would speed up the game so I'd die instantly, then it'd be their turn again.

That's why I distinctly remember the speeding up option.
I want to figure out what this game is so I can play it decently for once.

I really don't think you would know it unless you actually played it before. Thanks for trying to help though.

Can you remember anything more about it? I was looking around and I found a couple resources that might help you find the game. But I also found a video that might be it..?

http://www.mobygames.com was one good resource, though finding space shooters specifically is an annoying task as they don't have a space shooter / shoot 'em up category.

http://www.abandonia.com/ is another, but it seems to feature more of the freeware titles that probably weren't available to your day care (but who knows..)

---edit:
The reason I started looking is because I thought maybe there was a PC version of Defender somewhere along the way that I never knew about. There was, but it's not of the quality you describe and it was released in like 1988, i think. I love Defender and I'm satisfied with the NES version.
