Hacking NDS to get official Opera based web broswer?

I'd assume it works through the WIFI thingy, meaning public hotspots and stuff too. Complete guess, I actually don't have a clue how it works.

There's no way in hell I'd buy a web browser for the DS that costs that same amount as a budget DS game (AU$49). But I think it might be quite handy if it's dumped and is only a small file. You can just keep it permanently on your flashcart and use it as if it were a homebrew app

That would be cool.

Although like the PSP web browser, I have little use for it. I'm not THAT desperate to use the net when I'm away from home. And if i'm at home I'll just use the computer.

I think the browser is a good idea since it would allow me to access the internet on hot-spot at the university. The reason why i can't play Nintendo DS at university is because all logins to the network require a browser password entry. What you can do with this, is login in, quickly shut the thing off and switch games then login into Nintendo Wifi.

Anyways...i'm SURE Nintendo got this web browser up and off the ground for several reasons. First is to compete with Sony, second is to profit off what was meant to be a homebrew development

Sounds interesting and all but I have routinely seen the PSP give up on various resource hungry websites, now the DS has less memory, cpu power and so forth: what does the DS have for use as browser cache as well (neglecting flash carts which would not be used for an official product), maybe some DS cart based re-writable memory.
All this combined is not going to do anything to improve this situtation.
As for a firmware based browser I doubt much could be done with it: the firmware's memory chip is not very big at all and considering it has to hold the firmware as well and taken into conjunction with the lack of cache this is even less likely.
Still it could be fun to play with and if they include some form of touchscreen keyboard (make it a pulldown one please) I can see this taking off and make sure the browser is standalone.

PS I am taking bets on time to irate parent suing someone over their kids accessing porn or our good friend Mr Thompson making some laughable letter,news statement,televison appearance about how DS internet is causing a shooting/elephant deaths/an alien invasion, saying that if someone drags up wikipedia whilst outside to counter some statement I have made or just to be pedantic (I am even willing to overlook the fact that wikipedia is not the best source of info every written) I might well give Mr Thompson all the proof he will ever need, alongside this bets on time to an actual DS virus being made: Netnanny DS and Norton DS coming up.

I would like to see the tv tuner in europe.
As for the opera based explorer i would never use it.
When i want to be online i am at a place with a computer.
I don't want to use the internet when i am out ...

My university is set up the same way and I play on Wifi all the time. I set up one of my connections with the user/pass that they gave us and I just select that one whenever I want to play a game. When I'm at home, I select my other connection that doesn't require a password

Just read that this thing will use both the DS and the GBA slots. Does this mean we'll be able to save bookmarks and such?

Nintendo DS Gets Opera, TV Add-ons

Japanese Nintendo DS owners will soon be able to watch TV and surf the Web on the handheld game console thanks to upcoming add-on cards. Nintendo has selected Opera to power the browsing capability, which utilizes the device's built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and touch screen.

The DS browser uses the same core as Opera's desktop software and employs the console's dual screens. Opera's rendering engine automatically formats Web pages specifically for the device.

"Gaming devices are growing more advanced and a great Web experience is becoming a product differentiator for gaming manufacturers. Opera is excited to work with Nintendo to deliver a unique dual screen, full Internet experience on Nintendo DS," commented Scott Hedrick, executive vice president at Opera Software.

Few details were offered on the television card, but Nintendo said it would include an antenna capable of picking up programs broadcast for mobile devices. Japan is slated to begin such broadcasts starting April 1. The TV card is expected to hit the market before the end of the year, but no pricing was announced.

The Opera add-on card will be available in June for 3,800 yen, or $32 USD.

"Opera exceeded our expectations with its user friendly interface, quick access to all your favorite sites, ease of use and, most importantly, in making the best use of the Nintendo DS system's unique double screens and touch screen features," commented Masaru Shimomura, Deputy General Manager of Nintendo's R&D Department.

This digital TV thing, would it be able to get normal TV?? I live in a place where a lot of big lorries go by and they always make digital signal go bit off sometimes, I prefer watching normal TV as I never have problems.

I wonder if Nintendo Europe will now make the effort to get their site fully compatable with Opera?

I like the idea of browsing on the DS just sometimes I would like to be able to check the web wherever I am (subject to being near hotspot of course

)

However Opera gets updated quite regularly, I am guessing the DS cart will not be updateable? unless they do some very clever stuff with flash memory (or what would be the game save space)

And I do hope the TV tuner comes to Europe too.
